Surrounded by sound: how 3D audio hacks your brain | The Verge

On a crisp afternoon late last year, I made my way to Manhattan’s Upper East Side to meet Edgar Choueiri, a professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering at Princeton University. Choueiri also heads the school’s 3D Audio and Applied Acoustics lab, and over the last decade, he has dedicated his time to the development, application, and refinement of binaural recording systems — a century-old method of audio recording that captures lifelike 3D audio in picture-perfect fidelity.

In May 2011 I was commissioned by the Film Academy Ludwigsburg and Korion GmbH for a computer game to visualize a high-rez model of an explorer’s ship. For a game trailer I’ve rendered a ship and a few additional models for four CG sequences.

Tangram, A Mapping Library

(via)
Traditionally, maps have been expensive and time-consuming to make, but that’s changing fast. High-quality maps are easier to make every day thanks to OpenStreetMap and modern computer graphics capabilities, and we feel they can be pushed even further with ideas and techniques from 3D animation, video games, and other visual disciplines. To test this theory, the Mapzen graphics team has been working on a mapping library called Tangram.

Is the Oculus Rift sexist? – Quartz

In the fall of 1997, my university built a CAVE (Cave Automatic Virtual Environment) to help scientists, artists, and archeologists embrace 3D immersion to advance the state of those fields. Ecstatic at seeing a real-life instantiation of the Metaverse, the virtual world imagined in Neal Stephenson’s Snow Crash, I donned a set of goggles and jumped inside. And then I promptly vomited.
