On a crisp afternoon late last year, I made my way to Manhattan’s Upper East Side to meet Edgar Choueiri, a professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering at Princeton University. In May 2011 I was commissioned by the Film Academy Ludwigsburg and Korion GmbH for a computer game to visualize a high-rez model of an explorer’s ship. The first thing I thought of this was the “Santa Maria” of Christopher Columbus, who reached America in 1492. For a game trailer I’ve rendered a ship and a few additional models for four CG sequences.

Traditionally, maps have been expensive and time-consuming to make, but that’s changing fast. High-quality maps are easier to make every day thanks to OpenStreetMap and modern computer graphics capabilities, and we feel they can be pushed even further with ideas and techniques from 3D animation, video games, and other visual disciplines. An update to my classic minifigure model. This edition is similar to the Space Marines, and has a number of incremental updates to the older file, like: A Cycles material and render setup, complete with a re-usable 3-point lighting setup. Improved rigging with greater intuitive control. Some minor poly reworking to remove glitches. A cute little scene.
