(Ian Hixie) : The idea is that in future we would make the status bar indicate that URIs would be pinged (so it would not be secret -- it would be more obvious to the user than it is now, in fact), and, on the long run, to provide prefs (at least hidden prefs that extensions can hook into) to make this opt-out.
