Ce premier jour, une fois les présentations faites et le dōjō en ordre, fut dédié au retour aux bases. D’abord, il y eut la présentation du thème du stage, nen, signifiant le présent, maintenant, soit demeuré concentré sur le moment présent, conscience. Puis, une présentation destandoku kihon a permis à Sylvain Creuzet d’évaluer le niveau technique des pratiquants. Après un retour sur les déplacements (tsugi-ashi, ayumi-ashi), chacun des kihon a été revu en décomposant ceux-ci afin de corriger le plus de lacunes possible sous la supervision de Sylvain Creuzet. Des séances de suburi ont aussi été réalisées, introduisant les suburi de kaeshi tsuki, gyakute tsuki et maki otoshi aux jō suburi déjà intégrés à la pratique des participants. Enfin, une introduction à la méthode d’enseignement de Sylvain Creuzet, soit par exercices de niveaux 1 à 4 (le niveau 4 étant le plus avancé démontré), fut prodiguée, plus précisément par l’enseignement des ken suburi.

This is the first in a continuing series of articles on the Japanese art of iaido the modern discipline or way of drawing the sword that was popularized in the 1930's. It was derived from iaijutsu, a sub-specialization of kenjutsu (sword arts) that was practiced by professional (samurai) warriors and involved methods of drawing the sword and cutting as a single motion. Future articles will focus on concepts that relate to practice and then on specific analyses of kata and basic techniques.

This writing describes the terms “Junte” and “Gyakute”, and in Iaido the corresponding terms are “Juntou” and “Sakatou”. In Jodo we have “Honte” which corresponds to “Kirite” in Kendo. These words are different for each art. There are 3 ways to take Kamae (or stance) with the hips: front on, side on, and in between. These stances naturally have their own names as well. Particularly in Jodo, there are two ways to grip things - Honte and Gyakute. To understand Honte and Gyakute, one must perfectly explain these things, internalise these techniques, and put them into practice. So even if you understand these words, it is a different matter to be able to perform them properly or not. Matsuoka Sensei wrote in his book that even when one looks up these terms in the dictionary it is still difficult to understand. Since the time I came to comprehend SMR Jodo, I realised the carelessness about these issues (both of my myself and others). Therefore, I would like to explain my style.

KIAI is a non-profit association founded to improve the communications among kenjutsu instructors worldwide. Members of KIAI are instructors of Japanese sword arts from various styles, schools and associations, who teach all nihonto-related martial arts, including koryu and gendai kenjutsu, kendo, iaijutsu, iaido, batto-do, goshido, chanbara, shinkendo, aiki-boken, ninja-ken, and various other forms of Japanese swordsmanship. KIAI membership is free. KIAI organizes national, reginal and international seminars and competitions.

Les traditions qu'enseigne Jaff RAJI et avec lesquelles il empreinte ce chemin d'accomplissement de soi-même, s'appellent : AIKIDO, JODO et IAIDO. Ces trois voies contribuent au développement de l'unité de l'homme. Ces trois disciplines sont issues des traditions guerrières du Japon féodal du Moyen-Age et même plus anciennes. Elles ont eu aussi des traditions identiques dans nos sociétés occidentales du Moyen-Age. Une longue lignée d'hommes qui a contribué de fait à l'histoire de l'humanité. C'est avec grand respect qu'il considère ces hommes qui ont su perpétuer ces traditions et qu'il pratique ces disciplines.
