NUMBER27 / The Work of Jonathan J. Harris / Non-Geographic Mapping

by 2 others (via)
This experimental map was produced for Princeton University's International Networks Archive, an organization dedicated to finding a new way of mapping our world. The INA believes that geography is becoming increasingly irrelevant, and that there should be a new system of mapping, based on global transactions instead of geography. This map is an exploration into this theory, and reconfigures 23 world cities based on travel time between the cities instead of distance. Click on different cities, and the other world cities will slide to reflect their travel time from the chosen hub. The icons along the left of the window represent the various means of transport, and the time cost of each, in travelling between the hub and the highlighted city.

Mapping Architecture

(via)
Mapping Architecture Artificial Intelligibility is the name of a project initiated by the Institute for Advanced Architecture in 2001 in order to develop a software system for the accumulation and display of various social networks comprising architecture. The "Mapping Architecture" prototype allows users of the World Wide Web to browse the AI database as a series of static (although dynamically generated) images. For example, by clicking on Le Corbusier or Rem Koolhaas, the user fixes their perspective at a particular point in information space, and moves on from there. While the links above privilege legibility (and consequently only show one "degree of separation"), the following links broaden visibility to three degrees, sometimes at the expense of clarity: Bruno Taut or Joan Ockman

RootzMap @ SYSCTL LAB

A few months ago (June 2002) I was surfing a NASA website, when I saw they were giving out data sets from satellites. I thought that was so cool I downloaded a set of datas and analysed those a bit... I started to do some maps of the earth... but nothing really funny... Then came to me the idea of making some maps of the Internet and here is why this website exists, and probably why you are reading this...

this project aims to be a free, flexible, and easily modifiable visualisation tool that allows a user to intuitively understand their online social group structure. projects that this software have been based on are social network fragments and buddy graph -- this code has all the functionality from its counterparts (except zoom) that could be implemented in a generic fashion. for example, colouring is not in this software as currently it is impossible to colour the graph without asking the user to classify his or her entire mail network manually; it is too hard to do automatic classification and colouring of e-mail addresses to include it in this version. it should be noted that this entire field of "who knows who" visualisations are not useful for anything except as a curiosity. the images produces from this program as well as the other similar ones are not useful as any real metric of who knows who.

I've been doing some concept diagramming for work lately, and I've found myself enjoying it immensely. I'm really having fun with the design aspects of the diagrams and enjoying the way that little touches (type size, color highlights, icons) can enhance the readability of the resulting document. However, since it's for work (and a set of products that may not see light for

esono.com - Poetry on the Road 2006

(via)
Poetry on the Road is an international literature festival which is held every year in Bremen, Germany. Since 2002 I am commisioned to design a visual theme for the festival. While the theme itself is changing, the underlying idea for the visuals is always the same: All graphics are generated by a computer program that turns texts into images. So every image is the direct representation of a specific text. The design and the development process are a collaboration with the design agency jung und pfeffer.
