When Wikis Go Bad | evolt.org

by karlcow

When people are new to wiki concepts, it takes a real mental gear change for them to understand that anybody can edit a page, or add a new page. It takes a while for them to understand they can make changes themselves instead of emailing the author or moderator, or leaving comments, asking them to make changes.

wikiteam - tools for archiving wikis - Google Project Hosting

by karlcow

There are thousands of wikis in the Internet. Everyday some of them are no longer publicly available and, due to lack of backups, lost. Many people download tons of media files (music, books, etc) from the Internet, implementing a kind of distributed backup. Wikis, most of them under free licenses, disappear from time to time because nobody grabbed a copy of them. That is a shame that we would like to solve.

It gives the ability to cut or crop pages, compensate for skew angle, and add / delete content fields and margins, among others. You begin with raw scans, and end up with tiff's that are ready for printing or assembly in PDF or DjVu file. Scanning, OCR, and the building of single-file multi-page documents are not included in the project objectives. The program is developed for Windows, GNU / Linux, and other Unix-like systems such as Mac OS X.
