Jo 31 kata in 4 directions

by Takwann (via)
The 31 jo kata often practiced by aikidoka, is normally done in two directions - most movements to the front, and a few to the back. In my dojo, we got the idea of making it shiho, four directions, like most kata with that many movements are in other budo. It's fun for a change. Try it out, if you like - and if the photos and video clips are clear enough to figure out the movements. If not, then why don't you find out your own way of doing it? The photos were taken by Patrik Orth in Zlin. The video clips were filmed by Johnny Petersen at Enighet dojo in Malmö.

Lessons Learned Shooting with the Canon 5D Mark II :: digitalartwork – Multimedia Journalism

by sbrothier
For the Michael Jackson Memorial piece I worked on, we decided before I left for L.A. that we would use the Canon 5D Mark II to try and push the look of the piece, and to try something new. The first thing I did, is call up a freelancer, Patrick Burke, to run sound. Patrick used to be an AC (Assistant Camera) in L.A. so he came with all the right tools, including a film slate that we used to sync audio from a Marantz PMD660 to the video footage of the 5D.

After Effects Workflow at The New York Times :: digitalartwork – Multimedia Journalism

by sbrothier
The use of motiongraphics/animation is still pretty new at The New York Times. We’re still figuring things out, but I thought it might be useful for some people to see what our work flow is like.

I am a researcher at INRIA (Institut National de Recherche en Informatique et en Automatique) working in the Willow project at the Ecole Normale Supérieure. I completed my PhD at the University of Oxford working with Prof. Andrew Zisserman. My thesis dealing with efficient visual search of images and videos was awarded the Sullivan Thesis Prize and was short-listed for the BCS Distinguished Dissertation award - the prize for the best Computer Science thesis in the UK. Before coming to France I spent six months as a post-doc in the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Lab (CSAIL) at MIT, working with Prof. William Freeman.

yellowBird | See the world like never before

by sbrothier & 1 other
What does a bird have to do with the latest recording and displaying technology? Everything. Our technology is about enjoying a totally interactive 3D view. A view that reaches beyond today's standard perspective and that is experienced by viewers as if they are floating. Just like a bird soaring through the sky.

yellowBird Video Platform Puts You In the Middle, But Can It Tell a Story? - Jawbone.tv - The Evolution of Story.

by sbrothier
Interactive video has a long way to go, but Netherlands based yellowBird and their 360 degree offering might help move it along. We, as a species, watch a lot of vids. Buckets full, really. And for the most part, we're comfortable pressing play and being spoon-fed the story. This, at least in part, explains the lukewarm reception - commercially speaking - of interactive films. Most of the 'interactivity' centers on controlling the story.

How to Use DVD Shrink - Quick, easy-to-use guide for those unfamiliar with the DVD Shrink program.

by decembre
Recently, compressed domain transcoders have reached quite some popularity. These transcoders are based on algorithms designed to recompress an MPEG-2 stream in real-time for TV broadcast. These programs can transcode an entire DVD movie in only a few minutes, because they do not have to decode and re-encode the entire video stream, but only part of it. I will not go into a detailed explanation of the mechanisms used as they are quite involved but basically what you get is a size (and hence quality) reduction per time unit that cannot be rivaled by regular MPEG-2 encoders (though the latter category can yield better quality). DVD2One was the first program to be based on these principles, now DVD Shrink is the first free program to offer this functionality.
