PUBLIC MARKS with tag opera

With MediaTek eating larger and larger parts of Nokia's pie in the feature phone market, one can probably understand why we aren't too worried about what Nokia decides to do, its is market is vanishing on both the low and the high end (Windows Mobile 7 apparently sold fewer units in the 3rd quarter of 2011 than the 3rd quarter of 2010).As for Opera, this new deal with MediaTek will certainly help us towards our goal of 500 million active users by 2013.

As a real world example of how big the impact can be on performance, I made a test with the full HTML5 specification downloaded locally and ran the profiler. I noticed few of the most expensive selectors had ":link" and ":visited". I changed these to instead be "a:link" or "a:visited" (in this case they were equivalent in terms of which elements matched). This trivial change makes the engine use a cache, and bought the selector matching time down from about 14 seconds to about 11 seconds.

JF: To what can you attribute the growth with Opera? You’ve indicated that some of this is from emerging markets. Can you elaborate? KF: Opera has been a great partner and has really helped us get this going within their huge user base.  To some degree, our current customers reflect the distribution of Opera Mini users.  Many of these are in emerging markets such as India, Indonesia and Russia, where the mobile phone is the primary means of accessing the Internet for many people.  However, we are seeing a lot of traffic from North America and Western Europe as well.  User engagement – measured in visits per user and page views per visit – is strong around the world.

Carakan was originally developed in Linköping, with one guy in Göteborg. With people moving and other people joining the team, we're now pretty much one in Linköping, one in Göteborg, one in Oslo, and myself somewhat around in Glasgow. So, uh, yeah… CARAKAN-1024 (Release Party) still being unresolved shows how often we're actually physically all in one place. :)

PATCH-444, Make Twitter hashtags visible. Twitter does some script magic and ends up with broken element nesting: <span><strong>foo</span></strong> in turn causing Opera's layout engine to be upset. This will be fixed with the new parser so we'll just patch it meanwhile.

The HTML5 logo made with <canvas> by taking the paths in the SVG logo and rewriting them as moveTo()/lineTo().

If you don't see a slider below the logo, please try using Opera for desktop.

Why can't they just revert the mouse gestures engine to how it was before? It was perfect! Now it's broken, and it seems very likely that it's connected with how the visual UI works. Is holding newbies by the hand (while not in and of itself a bad thing) really more important to Opera than a functional implementation of mouse gestures?

Try reducing the Mouse Gesture Threshold to 1 or 3.

Link types for breadcrumb…

Nothing much would forbid to implement this by using links and type. There is for example Add-ons for Mozilla which shows icons but it would be entirely possible to create a breadcrumb with it.
