At The New York Times, our software engineers, journalists, product managers and designers are constantly striving to create new and innovative ways to present news and information and interact with our readers. Yet it's often difficult to try out new inventions on the world's largest newspaper Web site. That's why we created beta620, a new home for experimental projects from Times developers — and a place for anyone to suggest and collaborate on new ideas and new products.

Tweetcatcha uses the New York Times Timeswire API to load the latest news for the last 24 hours. We use the title and the url of the articles on nytimes.com to search through Twitter.

Starting in January 2011, a visitor to NYTimes.com will be allowed to view a certain number of articles free each month; to read more, the reader must pay a flat fee for unlimited access. Subscribers to the print newspaper, even those who subscribe only to the Sunday paper, will receive full access to the site without any additional charge.

The New York Times has published 5,000 people subject headings as linked open data under a CC BY license. We provide both RDF documents and a human-friendly HTML versions.

The New York Times includes a large amount of topical metadata with each article it publishes. These daily dumps plot the relationships, and geographies, of each article and are archived as RDF, XHTML and SVG maps.

The point of this exercise was mainly to show how thinking of the New York Times Topics as a controlled vocabulary, that can be serialized as a file, and still present on the Web, could be useful.

Releasing the Times thesaurus is consistent with our TimesOpen strategy. We want to facilitate access to slices of our data for those who want to include Times content in their applications.
