la part de gros lecteurs (qui étaient les premiers clients de la librairie traditionnelle) n'a cessé de diminuer, alors que la production a continué à exploser (la production de livres a augmenté de 175 % entre 1970 et 2007 pour atteindre quelque 70 000 titres chaque année).

Perhaps the bookshops themselves are partially to blame. We've been thinking hard how to turn things around, and haven't avoided being self-critical of the work we do.

Day 44: Born to be a librarian

Prototype of an online tool which aims to make searching for information easier by enabling users to compare library collections. It is aimed at researchers and academics and would focus on academic and specialist libraries.

This morning newly elected Governor, Jerry Brown, released his 2011-12 Budget proposal, calling it “painful” and one that “requires sacrifice from every sector of the state, but we have no choice.”  The plan recommends a whopping $12.5 billion in cuts and $12 billion in revenue options in order to address the staggering $25 billion Budget, as well as a “vast and historic restructuring of services,” as part of the Governor’s realignment proposal.

The bookstore has to become a space for meeting (staying) not only browsing. The space might have to be reorganized around discussions opportunities, and maybe access to the books in electronic format, but…

The ebooks give the possibility of a second hand market with more distribution of the values. When I buy an ebook, I should be able to sell it again and part of the money goes to me, part to the author. Really the infrastructure is already here for this.

The bookstore is the books storage place. Ebooks only need a computer. Bookstore owners have their values in talking about the books (not how to keep them), then not the space. They will disappear exactly like the photography store of the past. People with knowledge of the books will meet elsewhere.
