Alors que l’éventualité d’un rachat de Sun par IBM a alimenté les rumeurs pendant les dernières semaines, c’est finalement Oracle qui s’offre le créateur de Java. Cette technologie constitue d’ailleurs l’une des principales motivations pour cette opération : dans un communiqué, Oracle indique ainsi s’intéresser tout particulièrement à Java, mais aussi à Solaris, l’Unix de Sun ; l’acquéreur rappelle ainsi que son middleware Fusion est basé sur Java et que Solaris se distingue comme « plateforme leader pour les bases de données Oracle. » Dans les deux cas, Oracle insiste sur les perspectives d’optimisation pour ses applications.

Une fusion entre IBM et Sun poserait inévitablement une multitude de questions, notamment concernant le devenir des différentes plates-formes matérielles et systèmes d'exploitation, la gouvernance de Java et l'évolution de l'offre middleware de Big Blue. Sans oublier les éventuelles menaces antitrust sur le marché des serveurs haut de gamme et des librairies de bandes. Tour d'horizon des zones d'ombre.

Selon le Wall Street Jounal,des discussions seraient en cours en vue d’une acquisition de Sun par IBM. Montant du rachat : près de 7 milliards de dollars. Début mars, Gartner évoquait la consolidation sur le marché des serveurs.
