Complete Guide to Pre-Installed Fonts in Linux, Mac, and Windows
by Megan McDermott, 10 November 2007 - 4:48pm
Web designers often feel that they are restricted to a basic set of core web fonts. This small set of fonts has been widely distributed most designers stick to them, just to be on the safe side. However, when you look at the fonts available on the three most widely used operating systems, you can see that this really isn't necessary.
All three operaing systems come with a variety of fonts, many of which can be reasonably substitued for each other without affecting the design. You can also choose fonts that have the same look and feel that you want, but may not be close matches. This allows for much more flexibility in design while still ensuring compatibility across operating systems.

sIFR Tutorial: Use Your Own Fonts
Even though sIFR has been around for a couple years, many web designers have still never heard of it, let alone use it. sIFR (or Scalable Inman Flash Replacement) allows you to use custom typography on your site by utilizing JavaScript, Flash, and CSS. While most people simply create images when they need a custom-type title, sIFR can dynamically create short text blocks using whatever font you want (while still rendering the text with a default font on non-Flash browsers).

The Rather Difficult Font Game
By looking at type set in Rosewood you probably don’t have to second-guess yourself, but if your life depended on you making the distinction between Adobe Caslon Pro and Adobe Garamond Pro, then, things would be a whole lot different. Try it a couple of times if you don’t get it right the first time — you might catch a lucky break.

FDI fonts.info – font-face embedding demo
Safari 3.1 for Windows and Mac supports the embedding of “sfnt fonts” (TrueType, OpenType PS, OpenType TT) using the font-face declaration. Technically the fonts are not embedded in the website, but they are simply linked like an image file. Thus the fonts need to be stored on a public server. Since you cannot upload commercial fonts to a public webserver, you are limited to freeware fonts. FDI fonts.info believes in the future of web fonts, so we decided to provide webdesigners with a set of high-quality web fonts supporting a wide range of character encodings. Graublau Sans Web regular and bold can be downloaded for free from fonts.info and you may embed them in any website you like. If you do, please put a link to fonts.info on your site and mind the End User License Agreement.
