Boundaries or Barriers for Petite-Patrie-Mile-End? « Spacing Montreal

by karlcow

my stomping grounds straddle the CP rail line that divides the Plateau from Rosemont-Petite-Patrie. The train tracks and adjacent industrial areas create a boundary within the urban landscape, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing: over the decades, it has allowed the neighbourhoods on either side to  evolve distinct characters.

Visual Culture Blog: Visual Studies and Visual Communication

by sbrothier
The Visual Culture Blog is published by the photographer and researcher in visual culture Marco Bohr. As he reached the finishing line of a theory based PhD on Japanese photography of the 1990s, Marco began the Visual Culture Blog in October 2010 to vent some ideas that didn’t fit into the thesis. Born and raised in Germany, studying photography in Canada, living in Japan, and continuing postgraduate studies in the UK, he hopes to bring an international perspective to the study of visual culture(s). Marco recently completed a Visiting Fellowship at the Australian National University and is on his way to become Lecturer in Visual Communication at Loughborough University.

Pourquoi le numérique est-il une culture ? - ENTREPRISES : Stratégies & Cultures numériques

by Monique

by tonio78

The case for piracy – Blog – ABC Technology and Games (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)

by karlcow

When it comes to copyright theft and piracy, many people assume there's just one side - the side of truth, justice and copyright owners. Beyond that there are parasitical thieves. When most governments come to legislate on the matter, their response is usually one of listening to what big corporations and lobby groups say and nodding in agreement. For the general public, years of being bombarded by cross platform marketing campaigns have ingrained people with various "Piracy bad. Copyright good" slogans.

Thoughts on leadership - IBM100 THINK Forum - Joi Ito's Web

by karlcow

This has prompted a great deal of innovation, but also a complexity, speed and capacity for amplification that makes the world a difficult and dangerous place for many organizations and human-made systems designed for a slower and simpler era.

Nurture the Difference Between New York and Silicon Valley - Room for Debate - NYTimes.com

by karlcow

To be in Silicon Valley is to be completely immersed in technology. The building, the pushing, the hacking, the designing, the iterating, the testing, the acquisitions, the funding — it is everywhere and wholly inescapable. Here is a culture and place that emerged seemingly from nothing, and yet over the last 50 years it has developed a mythology deep and inspiring and all its own.
