Le iaido se pratique seul. Au cours de « katas » (situations fictives codifiées), le pratiquant apprend à dégainer, esquiver ou riposter. Plusieurs séries d’une dizaine de katas apprennent à faire face à toutes les situations possibles.
Les débutants travaillent avec un boken (sabre de bois). Après une période d’initiation, ils peuvent commencer à utiliser le iaito, copie de sabre à lame non tranchante.
