Endless Notebooks – Blog – BERG

by karlcow

Jack explains his notion of the service: it’s a way to preserve the contents of your notebook as an archive, whilst keeping the book in use as an ongoing tool. When you get to the second fold of scrim, you should find a note telling you it’s time to send the book off to be dismantled. This needs to be a really fast process for the service to work well – overnight, ideally; whilst your notebook is away, you won’t be able to take notes, so we need to make sure it can be returned to you as fast as you can. Fortunately, rebinding the book is a very, very quick process, especially for a skilled binder. It is, after all, just glue.

Systems with endless page bound already exists. What I would like is more a A6 or A7 inkjet printer, where I can insert page in a notebook

The xPL Project

by JJL
The xPL Project was started in January 2003 by Ian Lowe and Tony Tofts. It’s goal: To create a unified protocol to allow the control and monitoring of all devices within the home, whilst maintaining an unparalleled level of simplicity and ease of use. During the first half of 2003, the protocol was refined to include powerful auto-discovery and configuration capabilities. With the core protocol now in place, much of the work involves integrating xPL support into software and hardware devices.

SEO for Web Developers: Keywords and Links - Nefarious Designs

by Spone (via)
Since the dawn of the web, developers and content editors have sought insight and enlightenment into the arcane art of search engine optimisation (SEO). This relentless battle to rise above the competition and feature at the top of the search engine result page (SERP), for a chosen keyword or search term, has forced a constant clandestine evolution upon the search engines themselves whilst they adapt to out-trick the trickster.

Social Media Icons — Paul Robert Lloyd

by sbrothier & 2 others
I’ve often found myself requiring icons when linking to or referencing different social networks I’m a member of. Whilst there are a lot of icon sets available that can help me do this, most seem to be oversized and highly stylised. In the past I’ve used site favicons, but these can often be visually inconsistent.

The Hierarchy Of Digital Distractions | Information Is Beautiful

by ycc2106
So, if you get a new msg on Facebook, but your landline rings, you’ll take the landline call. You might have a spasmodic moment of ‘uh? wadd I do’. But, usually, you’ll take the call. Similarly, if you get a new SMS whilst opening a new online dating message, you’ll be hard pressed not to read that SMS. It’ll take a great force of will. You may attempt to do both simultaneously. But if you really observe yourself closely, one will take priority – even if it’s only by milliseconds. The SMS will win your attention.

Bellemo & Cat - Residential - Cocoon

by karlcow

This cocoon for weekend living is situated in a bushy coastal hamlet on the Great Ocean Road. The steepness of the site, the dramatic views and the sometimes harsh climate resulted in a object house that whilst protecting from the elements, opened one side to the landscape. In principle this is a matchbox inside an egg, a rectangle within an oval. Inside, the spaces dovetail together with the economic precision of a small boat or caravan.

one take impromptu film made in Tokyo by Dennis Wheatley and Stefan McClean. We were sitting in this sushi bar pondering how best to set up a camera to film things all by itself whilst we were in Tokyo. Take our hands out of the equation... let the camera have its own journey. I'd taken a cannibalised record turntable with me from the UK with the idea of filming slow panoramas but it was painfully bumpy and stopped every minute. Then we had our eureka moment and filmed this. A few years later I was working on a piece of music and married the two together. The music is all about that feeling when you're half asleep in the sun.. the ambiance of foreign voices becomes a lullaby to dream away.

SWORD - DigiRepWiki

by parmentierf
SWORD (Simple Web-service Offering Repository Deposit) will take forward the Deposit protocol developed by a small working group as part of the JISC Digital Repositories Programme by implementing it as a lightweight web-service in four major repository software platforms: EPrints, DSpace, Fedora and IntraLibrary. The existing protocol documentation will be finalised by project partners and a prototype ‘smart deposit’ tool will be developed to facilitate easier and more effective population of repositories. The project intends to take an iterative approach to developing and revising the protocol, web-services and client implementation through evaluative testing and feedback mechanisms. Community acceptance and take-up will be sought through dissemination activities. The project is led by UKOLN, University of Bath, with partners at the Aberystwyth University, the University of Southampton and Intrallect Ltd. The project aims to improve the efficiency and quality of repository deposit and to diversity and expedite the options for timely population of repositories with content whilst promoting a common deposit interface and supporting the Information Environment principles of interoperability.

GridMaker Reboot - Article - andrewingram

by sbrothier & 1 other
A few months ago I wrote GridMaker to aid in producing grid-based web design mock-ups in Photoshop (and later Fireworks). Whilst very primitive it was well-received and many have informed me how useful they’ve found it. At the same time it was clear that there were a number of issues so I went back to GridMaker and made a number of changes.

Debian Administration :: About - Debian Administration

This site was created as a simple weblog designed to contain interesting and useful information related to the System Administration of Debian GNU/Linux systems. Whilst there are several sites where users can post questions and have answers contributed by other users there are no other sites on the web which are specifically targetted at distributing articles of interest to Debian administrators.

alpha (beta)

by sbrothier & 12 others
Whilst aggregating feeds on one page is nothing new, we wanted to take a federated search concept one step further. With this beta, we have introduced personalisation elements that not only allow users to customise their view, but also to add their favourite search service (at least those who syndicate their search results via OpenSearch RSS).

Simple Meditations

and thymus glands respectively. Again sitting comfortably on a chair or on a cushion, take a few gentle deep breaths to relax your body. Now allow your upper body to slowly begin swaying in a clockwise direction, whilst simultaneously pressing the tip of your tongue to the roof of your mouth. Do this for 2 or 3 minutes. This stimulates the pituitary gland. Next, whilst still sitting upright, slowly tip your head forward until your chin is nearly touching your chest. Hold this position for a few seconds and then begin moving your head backwards, as far as is comfortable, so you are looking up at the sky and hold this position for a few seconds. Next, bring your head back to an upright position and slowly tip your head sideways as far as is comfortable, first to the left and then the right, holding for a few seconds in each position. Repeat this pattern once more. This stimulates the thyroid gland in the throat area. Finally, begin to gently tap the area in the centre of your chest, 2 inches above where the centre of the rib cage ends. Do this for 1 or 2 minutes. This stimulates the thymus gland. This meditation encourages the activity of these three crucial glands in our body which release the hormones that control: happiness, metabolism and growth, and the immune system.
