The concept of ownership — possessing the exclusive rights and control over a property of any kind — has existed for centuries and in all cultures. Whether by state, collective or personal, ownership is a determining factor not only in our built environment, but in the way we shape our society, too. Yet what happens to ownership when the behaviors and needs of our society shift? What do we need to own, if anything at all? In every change, the redefinition provides new opportunities for our built environment.

Social Media Buttons on Mobile-First Responsive Designs - Themble

by Spone
Social Sharing buttons can be brutal on load time (Facebook I’m looking at you) and with speed being a crucial factor in building a mobile version of your site, it can be a pain to try and maintain all those scripts without slowing down the site in the process. Loading Facebook, Twitter, Google’s +1 button, and other sharing buttons for a mobile site isn’t ideal.

Justice Society of America: The Bad Seed

With the coming of the new JSA spin-off title, JSA ALL-STARS, we all knew which way the wind was blowing. And I guess it was an obvious move, what with the JSA ranks having risen to such ridiculous numbers that even Legionnaires are now passing judgment. Factor in too that new scribes Bill Willingham and Matthew Sturges want to make an instant mark, and so we get the splintering.

In The Era Of The Connected Camera, The Point & Shoot Commits Seppuku

by karlcow

Obviously, the 10-megapixel, $400 S95 is the superior camera when compared to the 5-megapixel, $200 (with subsidy) iPhone 4. But the fact that I always have my phone on me easily trumps the specs. But to me, there’s actually something other than just the portability factor that leads to my usage being so heavily skewed towards the iPhone: connectivity.

The decisive factor, in my view are not the Plugins, but the environment with xDebug and the settings that WordPress offers as standard in this context. Therefore, I can only recommend to have the following lines in the wp-config.php of the environment.

KubuntuKarmicNetbook - Ubuntu Wiki

by tadeufilippini (via)
* KubuntuKarmicNetbook You are here: Kubuntu Wiki » KubuntuKarmicNetbook * Launchpad Entry: kubuntu-karmic-netbook-edition * Created: June 1, 2009 * Contributors: ScottK, Tonio, other Kubuntu devs * Packages affected: kubuntu-default-settings, possibly a new plasma-netbook-shell package Summary Provide, as a technology preview for Karmic, a new minor *buntu flavor, Kubuntu Netbook Edition. KDE4 is designed from the ground up to be scalable to many form factors. Many Kubuntu users are already using it in netbook computers. The intent is to make it easy for Kubuntu to just work. Release Note This release includes a new member of the Ubuntu family, Kubuntu Netbook Edition. This variant of Kubuntu is aimed at netbooks and other small form factor devices. Rationale Netbooks appear to be growing in popularity. An install image optimized for this form factor would be great for users and may have some commercial potential. KDE 4 is designed to be scalable and is easily adjusted to new form factors. It may be particularly useful to have in the *buntu stable in cases where a quick turn around for a particular device type is needed. User stories Jane has used Kubuntu for years and wants it on her new netbook. She is pleased to find Kubuntu Netbook Edition gives her a familiar environment scaled to her new device. Klaus has a new netbook device coming to market with an exciting new form factor. He needs an OS for it, but needs it soon. With a little help, he's able to ship on time and on budget with Kubuntu Netbook Edition. Assumptions None. The settings changes have been prototyped and the plasma-netbook shell will only be included if it is mature. Design Test various settings such and font and panel sizes in the netbook form factor to determine good settings for smaller systems. Test and integrate plasma-netbook shell if ready. Implementation Implementation will have three major parts Settings Changes A new Kubuntu default settings netbook package will be needed along with a netbook metapackage for this edition (in Universe for Karmic) New Flavour Setup A kubuntu netbook seed will need to be created. Image builds for i386 will be needed. Plasma Netbook Shell If it is ready, the plasma Netbook shell will be packaged and used as the default front end for Kubuntu Netbook Edition. It is currenlty in heavy development and likely to be ready for Karmic. * http://techbase.kde.org/Projects/Plasma/Plasma-Netbook * http://www.notmart.org/index.php/BlaBla/put_a_net_in_your_book * http://www.notmart.org/index.php/Software/Plasmanetbook_breaths Some patching of kdelibs/base/plasma-addons is needed (and doable before feature freeze) to support Plamsa Netbook in KDE 4.3. Test/Demo Plan Images will need to be thoughly tested before release. We will encourage people to test these on netbook and full form hardware. Unresolved issues Inclusion of Plasma Netbook shell TBD pending testing. [this is aaronland] cheap rent in the z-axis

by karlcow

Right now, I'm trying to decide if I want to run my own infrastructure for this stuff. From a privacy and creepiness factor it makes the most sense. At least for me. Maybe for anyone else, it's an equal kind of toss-up whether they'd be comfortable handing over their location data to me or to someone like Google.

Quick Tip – Resizing Images Based On Browser Window Size | Build Internet!

by mozkart
In fluid layouts it is easy to format the text to adjust nicely when the window is resized, but the images are not as fluid-friendly. This Quick Tip shows you how to swap between two image sizes based on the current size of the browser, div, or whatever you decide to make the deciding factor. For those looking for a real life example, Last.fm uses this technique on their artist pages. The technique that will be used can be expanded to cause additional changes upon resize as well, beyond simply image swapping (ie captions, navigation).

Brand loyalty

by irols
Abstract Brands are important in the consumer market. They are the interface between consumers and the company, and consumers may develop loyalty to brands. This study proposes that trust in a brand is important and is a key factor in the development of brand loyalty. Factors hypothesized to influence trust in a brand include a number of brand characteristics, company characteristics and consumer-brand characteristics. Respondents representing a broad spectrum of Singapore consumers were surveyed. The findings reveal that brand characteristics are relatively more important in their effects on a consumer's trust in a brand. The results also show that trust in a brand is positively related to brand loyalty. Marketers should, therefore, take careful consideration of brand factors in the development of trust in a brand.
