Chevrolet speedometer design

by karlcow

The design of speedometers hasn’t changed much over the decades. Recently, however, there’s a trend towards digital meters. They’re probably supposed to look fresh and new, but due to the use of stopwatch-like (the digital stopwatch was invented in 1971) typefaces they actually look extremely primitive and dated.

Reclaiming the right to development - OurWorld 2.0 | OurWorld 2.0

by karlcow

Furthermore, the costs and benefits generated by that economic expansion are shared very unequally. In 1990, the ratio of the per capita income in the richest 20 countries to that in the poorest 20 was $42 to $1. By 2005, it had deteriorated to $59 to $1 and we can expect that trend to be even worse today.

Alex MacCaw - Asynchronous UIs - the future of web user interfaces

by Spone & 2 others
It's an interesting time to be working on the frontend now. We have new technologies such as HTML5, CSS5, Canvas and WebGL; all of which greatly increase the possibilities for web application development. The world is our oyster! However, there's also another trend I've noticed. Web developers are still stuck in the request/response mindset. I call it the 'click and wait' approach - where every UI interaction results in a delay before another interaction can be performed. That's the process they've used their entire careers so it's no wonder most developers are blinkered to the alternatives. Speed matters; a lot. Or to be precise, perceived speed matters a lot. Speed is a critical and often neglected part of UI design, but it can make a huge difference to user experience, engagement and revenue.

Here is the first of 4 X-Men books, chronicling the Onslaught Saga from the late 90′s. Many people will praise it. Many people will hate it. This is one of the those books that marked the beginning of a downward trend for Marvel.

Google Correlate

by oseres
Google Correlate is an experimental new tool on Google Labs which enables you to find queries with a similar pattern to a target data series. The target can either be a real-world trend that you provide (e.g., a data set of event counts over time) or a query that you enter.

Testing the Limits With Scott Barber – Part I | Software Testing Blog

by night.kame

I believe that the trend to “go Agile” is misguided. If a company is developing good software, the people involved in developing that software are happy working there, the software development is sustainable, and the business is being adequately served by that software, there’s really no need for them to try to be more or less Agile. Agile has challenges like any other culture, but the single biggest challenge I find is companies trying to solve development, process, management, and/or schedule problems by “going Agile.” Teams who have grown up in a culture that is fundamentally different than Agile simply will not find it easy to “go Agile.”

(Article) An empty head learns nothing « Dokodemo Diary

by Takwann
The idea that, in aikido, a new person needs to learn how to learn is paralleled by the above topic. If it’s really been shown based on study of artificial intelligence and cognitive science, then it’s almost silly to regard it as a novel insight tied to aikido. Yet, a trap that many seniors and teachers fall into is to try to teach people everything, indeed, spending very little time on the most elementary aspects and “moving on” to more advanced topics, considering them to be more practical, applicable, “real”, or possibly just more interesting. There is, on the other hand, a trend in some circles to strongly emphasize the elementary aspects, and implicitly de-emphasize, possibly creating a subtle taboo around, more advanced topics.

Frieze Magazine | Archive | New Faces

by sbrothier (via)
It only takes a glance at the cover of any recent Paris Vogue to see that something odd is afoot. There’s the hair for a start. Veering between the lank and the bushy, it never quite achieves the luxuriant waves that are the norm. All around are quirky touches: idiosyncratic typefaces, hand-drawn motifs and even collage. This may not sound like much, but in the context of fashion magazines Paris Vogue is doing more than bucking a trend; it is attempting to shrug off a genre.
