The Way of Least Resistance: The "flinch reflex"

by Takwann
Martial artists often talk about the the "flinch reflex". Some insist on "training it out" or "getting over it" (if that is at all possible - more on that later).

Big Macs vs. The Naked Chef - Joel on Software

by night.kame

The trouble is that the "training" doesn't really produce consistent results, so Youthful Programmer starts creating rules and procedures that are meant to make more consistent results. Over the years, the rule book grows and grows. Soon it's a six-volume manual called The Methodology.

After a few dozen years, Youthful Programmer is now a Huge Incompetent IT Consultant with a capital-M-methodology and a lot of people who blindly obey the Methodology, even when it doesn't seem to be working, because they have no bloody idea whatsoever what else to do, and they're not really talented programmers -- they're just well-meaning Poli Sci majors who attended the six-week course.

Outsourcing Statistics 2011

by personmark
Running an internet business alone is neither simple nor practical. Sooner or later there will have to be some help needed from experts who can be hired on a regular basis or from internet outsourcing companies which main focus is to give out help for others at a fraction of the usual cost. The need to outsource the different tasks are usually spearheaded by the need to have more time to do other things that need more attention, the need for someone better equipped to handle things like writing, web design, programming and maintenance, and even marketing promotions. Outsourcing the tasks to those who have more experience in these fields may not be painless, but it is definitely more practical. The first thing to do is to really find out what are those tasks that need to be accomplished in the least amount of time possible without costing too much stress on the wallet. Truthfully, some of these outsourcing companies may be expensive, but then, hiring a regular employee with half the skills will cost more because of the duties the employer has to give in exchange. Of course there are pros and cons to everything, especially in outsourcing. There are simply too many complaints written about the services these providers give and yet there are even more written articles on benefits that hiring companies have experienced. Some simply won’t even consider thinking of other options than outsourcing for they find that the benefits definitely outweigh the negative feedbacks. For one thing, outsourcing companies will only assign those who are trained to do specific tasks and usually never over rate themselves. This eliminates the time wasted on having to spend for the training of a new employee to get used to the system and having to spend on equipment to make the whole system work. Outsourcing companies are already fully equipped with the hardware, software and the gray matter. When it comes to highly skilled tasks like accounting, web design, programming and others, these outsourcing companies already have within their coffers their own staff with the necessary skills and they simply assign them over. The getting-to-know stage is limited to a few days up to a week, definitely a shorter amount of time than when hiring someone in office. Hiring and assigning of tasks are also done with ease and as the outsourcing companies rely on their volume and exchange of work, they are most likely never late in submitting their finished work. Eventually, the contractual work is easier on everyone in both accomplishing tasks and cost effectiveness. Working with these offshore companies means that one has to always contend with language, cultural, time schedule and other barriers. It is always best to make arrangements for the time to make communication and submission of accomplished tasks. Because these outsourcing companies are based in countries that depend on the monetary exchange rates, they are also most likely to offer up the least amount of rates. These rates are the considerations that have to be examined, if the rates are lower compared to other companies, they are most likely not the good companies that most are relying on. There are a lot of fly-by-night companies that are overrated and only hire under-skilled personnel.

5 Kumi Tachi | Takemusu Aikido South Africa | Aikido South Africa

by Takwann
The kumi-tachi (kumi: to unite, group; tachi: sword) refers to advanced partner practice with the sword, encompassing 5 basic forms plus variations. The kumi exercises and their variations are the respective beginnings and the in-depth study of the martial applications of the basic training exercises. Associated with these exercises are strict rules of engagement based upon traditional fighting methods developed over centuries of use and refinement in a feudal society, and because they have a great practical basis they therefore dictate many of the reasons behind the movements. There is a great collection of variations that stem from these kihon (basics), due to the variables of combat, and the creativity of instructors. Once these exercises are properly learnt through slow, controlled and relaxed training, the movements can be performed more quickly and strongly, with the timing and flow varied to enable the student to experience a wide variety of possibilities in attack and defence.

Kata Is Like A Textbook

by Takwann
Judging by some articles practitioners of the martial arts are beginning to seriously look at their arts and asking the question - is what I am being taught really self-defence or just an oriental art form? What's more, they're asking why you do this and that technique. Rather than just following blindly from one technique to another because someone tells them its so. This is not to say there is anything wrong with their particular martial art just the way they have been viewed or interpreted. Of course, it all depends on what you are training for in the first place. Are you doing it just to keep fit or as a sport? But for those of us who may need it for something more practical because of your job or environment then studying a martial art or some other combative system that offers you the best possible chance of surviving a bad situation is your best bet. Even so, unfortunately, many instructors of various systems are only capable for what ever reason, in teaching young and active trainees and do not teach traditional kata at all. Believing, wrongly in my opinion that kata has no place in a modern day combative system.

Mud Run Races, Training and Gear

by personmark
Finding a mud run The best way to find a mud run to compete can be a little bit tricky. Mud runs aren’t as common as 5K’s, which are usually a dime a dozen on any given Saturday, and this is due to staging the muddy course. There is not a comprehensive calendar that exclusively lists mud runs. Some online calendars can classify mud runs as adventure races or even trail runs. The best way to find a mud run in your area would be to do a simple google search. Just type mud run and your local zip code in the search bar, and see what comes up. Also, if your community has a local running club, that would be a good place to inquire. Finally, just drive to a local running store in your area and ask the manager. They are usually more then happy to help, and may even have registration forms on site. With a little time and the proper resources, you will be able to find a mud run close to you and start getting dirty. Happy hunting.

conscious competence learning model matrix- unconscious incompetence to unconscious competence

by Takwann
Here first is the 'conscious competence' learning model and matrix, and below other theories and models for personal learning and change. The earliest origins of the conscious competence theory are not entirely clear, although the US Gordon Training International organisation has certainly played a major role in defining it and and promoting its use (see the notes below about the conscious competence model origins).

Dare to Know!

by Takwann
You may be familiar with an essay that I wrote in 2008 on the topic of Respectful Irreverence as an approach to tactical training topics. I want to explore an underlying theme in more detail, the theme of Sapere Aude, “Dare to Know.” Originally, this Latin phrase was used to advise people to “trust their own reason.” Don’t take someone else’s word and don’t automatically doubt your own logic or impression of a situation. If something doesn’t make sense to you, figure it out. In this way, Sapere Aude ties in very well with the concept of Respectful Irreverence.

How Should You Practice After Training?

by Takwann
Once we finish a personal defense training class, a question that should remain in our minds is, “Where do I go from here?” We trainers almost universally say that you have to practice after a class to ingrain the skills you learned in order to achieve the unconscious competence necessary to prevail in a critical incident. In order to practice properly, you have to have a plan for it. The saying “Only perfect practice makes perfect” applies not only to the physical skills involved but also to the structure of what and how you practice.

Violence in Kendo

by Takwann
Recently I have received some questions in the Q&A area about bullying and other forms of violence in kendo. And I happened to help Blake Bennett with his thesis on the very topic. I hope one day you can read his thesis somehow. After reading the thesis and thinking about violence in kendō, I thought it is very important for every one of us to consider howkendō sould be trained and instructed without losing the core essence of kendō. It is true that in kendō we still have "traditional methods" in training. These look vicious and really violent to itsaudience if they do not know what they are doing.
