Visual Culture Blog: Visual Studies and Visual Communication

by sbrothier
The Visual Culture Blog is published by the photographer and researcher in visual culture Marco Bohr. As he reached the finishing line of a theory based PhD on Japanese photography of the 1990s, Marco began the Visual Culture Blog in October 2010 to vent some ideas that didn’t fit into the thesis. Born and raised in Germany, studying photography in Canada, living in Japan, and continuing postgraduate studies in the UK, he hopes to bring an international perspective to the study of visual culture(s). Marco recently completed a Visiting Fellowship at the Australian National University and is on his way to become Lecturer in Visual Communication at Loughborough University.

Hypermedia APIs - Jon Moore on Vimeo

by karlcow

RESTful web services are one of our core design patterns. Fielding’s thesis identifies four major constraints that identify a RESTful architecture (statelessness, resource-orientation, uniform interface, hypermedia-driven application state). Many “RESTful” APIs only get 3 out of 4 of these; we’ve begun experimenting with using XHTML as a media type for our APIs, and this provides a lot of power in terms of scalability and loose coupling between client and server.

by sbrothier & 1 other
This is my final thesis project. I created info-graphic, motion piece. My objective is to make Japanese people to think about that everything happening here in Japan, isn't that normal. So I created this video from foreigner's point of view, rather than Japanese people's point of view.

Violence in Kendo

by Takwann
Recently I have received some questions in the Q&A area about bullying and other forms of violence in kendo. And I happened to help Blake Bennett with his thesis on the very topic. I hope one day you can read his thesis somehow. After reading the thesis and thinking about violence in kendō, I thought it is very important for every one of us to consider howkendō sould be trained and instructed without losing the core essence of kendō. It is true that in kendō we still have "traditional methods" in training. These look vicious and really violent to itsaudience if they do not know what they are doing.

The topic of my Master thesis project is the development of a design pattern taxonomy for data visualization and information design. In its core, the project consists of a collection of 55 design patterns that describe the functional aspects of graphic components for the display, behavior and user interaction of complex infographics. The thesis is available in the form of a 200-page book that additionally includes a profound historical record of information design as well as an introduction into the research field of design patterns. It has been submitted by the end of February 2008, and will be presented in mid-April. Further information on the thesis content and a first version of the pattern browser prototype will be online soon after.

S-XL CAKE | thesis.armina

by karlcow

'S-XL CAKE is a baking dish with a new approach: The shape of the cake is inspired by the permanent issue "how to divide a cake?". S-XL CAKE plays with our individual need for different sizes of cake-pieces in a decorative, provocative and ironic way by taking advantage of the new possibilities that flexible silicone baking dishes offer.'

Are You a Chronic Meta-Enabler? - The Awl

by alphoenix
A number of us (and I am thinking her and her in particular) are sometimes mounting, and sometimes are not, an opposition to what Yahoo! News' Andrew Golis is calling "meta-enabling," in a coinage that isn't really going to stick but is fun for a while. For more explication: "Meta-enabling allows blogs to treat the way in which the posts are presented as the thesis of the post itself (hence, the necessity of the prefix meta- to the term)." Meta-enabling, and its prettier sister, the treatment of the highbrow in a pop culture way (which is, not at all incidentally, our own more-frequently-employed method here), are the hallmarks of our ironic, sarcastic, I-can't-actually-tell-what-you-really-mean age and it is causing a problem.

video of my multitouch table with my software in action. Both hardware and software were built for my bachelor’s thesis which I handed in in march. The software that you see at the end is written in Python with PyMT, using the VTK library.

6 Tips for Building Relationships with Journalists

by oseres
I was over at Robert Scoble’s blog Sunday night reading about the “Death of the Great Startup Launch.”  I’m not 100% sure that I understood his core thesis but I *think* it was that startup events such as Demo force such a zone of secrecy about what you’re working on (with a threat of being kicked out of the event for leaking your story) that they kill the ability for most companies to dazzle people with a great company launch and doesn’t allow journalists to triangulate with others in the market before going to press.  Oh, and Demo charges the startups $18,000.  Robert’s article is worth reading.

Presidents Medals: New Malacovia

by karlcow

The design thesis, the portable city of New Malacovia, is the blueprint for a perpetually sustainable culture and an environmentally responsible city. Inspired by the narrative text of the lost Malacovian city from “The Dictionary of Imaginary Places”, the research followed the emigration of the city’s leader, a Nogai prince (and inventor) and his people during the Crimean War to a new settlement in the Danube River delta. The project extrapolates the inventions and urban ideas of the old city into programmatic, tectonic and environmental concerns for New Malacovia.

TuneIn

by sbrothier & 1 other
That was our thesis for building TuneIn. Social and "new" media websites have enabled us all to create a river of information, most recently in the form of real-time streams. There is gold in those streams. Daily, hourly, minute-by-minute gold. People have started mining that gold, not only for their own personal benefit, but also for their friends. With services like Twitter and Facebook, people, rather than algorithms, are providing the most valuable take on what's worth reading, watching and hearing. They are bringing perspective to an otherwise fuzzy picture, helping determine what's signal and what's noise.

Meta-Enabling

Meta-enabling allows blogs to treat the way in which the posts are presented as the thesis of the post itself (hence, the necessity of the prefix meta- to the term)

The dark side of the internet

by alphoenix
Fourteen years ago, a pasty Irish teenager with a flair for inventions arrived at Edinburgh University to study artificial intelligence and computer science. For his thesis project, Ian Clarke created "a Distributed, Decentralised Information Storage and Retrieval System", or, as a less precise person might put it, a revolutionary new way for people to use the internet without detection. By downloading Clarke's software, which he intended to distribute for free, anyone could chat online, or read or set up a website, or share files, with almost complete anonymity.

Thesis : BNM

Today, the sexuality is a taboo for elderly generations.

During my investigation, I have observed many prejudices about this topic in our society.

However, sexuality is always active over 70 years old.

I have revaled three specifics aims to start my project :

- Stimulate Sexual desire of elders into rest-home

- Educate practical nurses and students

- Sensitize general public about sexuality of elderly people

You can watch the differents ideas I suggested

to resolve these 3 problems in Diploma's part.

~IDENTITÄT – The »Gestalt« of digital identity

by karlcow

More than one hundred thousand personal raw data sets were crawled from the web to fill this parameters with subject matters. Based on the thesis that the digital identity is measurable and comparable these data sets were visualized using custom computational tools.

These studies were designed to understand the data and determine its characteristics regarding the construction of digital identity.

After the analysis phase the data was visually abstracted and interpreted to give the disembodied digital identity a unique and characteristic »Gestalt« in form of a generated sculpture.
