Kazuo Ohno, a founder of Butoh, the influential Japanese dance-theater form whose traditional look of darkness and decay evoked for many the horrors of the wartime bombings of Japan, died on Tuesday in Yokohama, Japan. He was 103 and had continued to perform beyond his 100th year.

Japanese Masks have become popularized through their use in Noh and other theater and dance. They were originally used to cover the face of the performer and represent generalized figures such as Hero, Deity, Ghost, Mythical Animal, etcetera. The use of certain masks like Okame, Hyottoko, and Tengu also became popular in certain festivals around Japan, often adding a comic quality.

Japan experienced an economic boom during World War One (1914 to 1918), and with this emerged new middle class consumers, particularly in the cities. Despite the temporary devastation wrought by the Great Kantō Earthquake of 1923 that destroyed large portions of the capital Tokyo and surrounding areas, the ensuing post-earthquake “reconstruction boom” stimulated an already emergent cosmopolitan urban culture centering on department stores, cafes and cabarets, modern cinema and theater, and cutting-edge innovations in business, industry, and popular culture. Shiseido’s posters and advertisements were at the forefront of this dramatic transformation in consumer society, particularly in regards to marketing new concepts of modern beauty and hygiene.

Night Journey is a handmade pop-up by Jayme McGowan. The original artwork has been reprinted onto matte photo paper and carefully assembled as a two-layer, collapsible, pocket theater housed in a handmade wood box.

In the event that insufficient participants come forward to complete the first and only edition of the story within the author’s lifetime, the incomplete version will be considered definitive.
