Bait bikes: the way to beat theft gangs or entrapment? | Frederika Whitehead | Environment | guardian.co.uk

by karlcow

This tactic, also known as decoy or tracker bikes, sees police leaving badly locked, or even unlocked, bicycles in vulnerable locations. They are fitted with hidden GPS devices, letting officers trace them to the thieves, or better still to a lock-up or warehouse used by gangs to store lots of stolen bikes.

YouTube - Shaolin Sword Techniques vs. Japanese Katana

by Takwann
Grandmaster Wong Kiew Kit demonstrating some of the secrets of the Shaolin Sword (Jian). All of the exchanges are impromptu. The Shaolin Sword is an amazing weapon. It is light, and can be easily broken if clashed directly with heavier weapons. Nevertheless, it was the choice weapon of many masters in the past because in the hands of a skillful swordsman, the techniques can be amazing. The Shaolin Sword is quite different from swords of other martial cultures, like the Samurai sword or the Western sword. Some kung fu practitioners, however, use a Jian as if it were a Samurai sword, a Western sword, or a kung fu saber (Dao). This is incorrect. This video shows some of the secret applications of the Shaolin Sword. These sword techniques were kept as top secrets in the past. Hence, many kung fu practitioners today who have learned sword sets do not know the combat applications of the sword. One of the tactics of the Shaolin Sword is to attack the wrist and hand of the opponent, thereby disarming him. This tactic is shown in the video.

Inside BBC's Chimera botnet | Zero Day | ZDNet.com

by brianwaustin
"Earlier this month, the controversial BBC purchase of a botnet and modifying the infected hosts in the name of “public interest” sparked a lot of debate on the pros and cons of their action. Condemned by certain security vendors, and naturally, at least from guerrilla PR perspective, applauded and encouraged as a awareness raising tactic by others, the discussion shifted from technical to moral and legal debate, leaving a single question unanswered - what is the name of the botnet that the BBC rented and what’s so special about it?

BeTheBot

by cascamorto & 4 others
What is this site? Have you ever been googleing something, and you see exactly what you need in the preview, but when you click the link it doesnt show you what you want to see? This is because the owners of the site are trying to trick you into buying something, or registering. It's a common tactic on the internet. When Google visits the site, it gives something called a "Header". This header tells the site who the visitor is. Google's header is "Googlebot". The programmers of the site check to see if the header says "Googlebot", and if it does, it opens up all of its content for only googles eyes. Now, all we have to do is trick the site's headers, into thinking that we ARE google. That's what this site does. See the How to use box to the right for instructions on usage

Mashup (web application hybrid) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

by pvergain & 2 others (via)
A mashup is a website or application that combines content from more than one source into an integrated experience. It is sometimes created as a critique or commentary on an existing work or product. The tactic owes much to previous recombinant forms including: content repurposing, most notably by Kenneth Anger in his 1963 film Scorpio Rising; DJ mixing and culture jamming. Content used in mashups is typically sourced from a third party via a public interface or API, although some in the community believe that only cases where public interfaces are not used count as mashups. Other methods of sourcing content for mashups include Web feeds (e.g. RSS or Atom) and JavaScript. Many people are experimenting with mashups using Google, eBay, Amazon, AOL, Windows Live, and Yahoos APIs.

New Tactic in Abortion-Foe Fight: Evicting Clinics

by jasontromm
If you can't beat 'em, buy 'em. That's the tactic that an anti-abortion group in Wichita, Kan., took when it boasted about its purchase of a former abortion facility building and subsequent plans to convert it into a memorial for aborted fetuses. Operation Rescue bought the former site of Central Women's Services weeks after the abortion clinic sold its equipment and closed the doors -- a tactic used before by similar groups that may increase. ()() Isn't this the same tactic used by environmental wackos? If you can't beat 'em, evict 'em. Why is it OK for liberal groups to use this tactic, but not conservative groups?

Cops go to hotel bars to arrest drunk guests

by jasontromm
The controversial police tactic of arresting drunks at bars and restaurants has gone to a new level, to include intoxicated people at hotels, even those who are registered guests with no plans on driving. ()() This seems to be a shocking violation of peoples' civil liberties. Don't these cops know the 21st Amendment repealed the 18th Amendment?

Ted Kennedy Disgraced Himself

by jasontromm
Kennedy was the architect of an unprecedented tactic: using filibusters to polarize the Senate along party lines thus denying the confirmation of qualified conservative judges. In Bush's first term the Senate Democrats used that tactic successfully against at least 10 nominees for judgeships on circuit courts.

P.O.V. - Last Man Standing . The Great Election Grab (Page 1) | PBS

by multilinko (via)
"This was a fundamental change in the rules of the game," Heather Gerken, a professor at Harvard Law School, said. "The rules were, Fight it out once a decade but then let it lie for ten years. The norm was very useful, because they couldn't afford to fight this much about redistricting. Given the opportunity, that is all they will do, because it's their survival at stake. DeLay's tactic was so shocking because it got rid of this old, informal agreement." But Texas law contained no explicit prohibition on mid-decade redistricting, so the leadership of the state government, now unified in Republican hands, tried during the summer of 2003 to push through a new plan. Democrats attempted novel forms of resistance. In May, fifty-one House members fled to Oklahoma, to deprive the new leadership of a quorum; in July, a dozen senators decamped to New Mexico, for the same purpose. But defections and the passage of time weakened Democratic resolve, and, on October 13th, the plan sponsored by DeLay was passed.
