So, we developed a don't-ask/don't-tell policy of making private copies of documents and carrying them around with us. Engineers, to generalize, hate waiting around for stupid reasons, and having documents meant that we could get to work. It also made us look better, since we got things done on time, instead of having to send out lame excuses that we're late because we're waiting on a fax.

Paris, Je t’aime | Garance Doré

by karlcow

Let me explain why and how this happened. Years ago an Italian writer wrote a book (not a great book), a story about teenagers, love and death. A scene in this book described two lovers who hooked a lock at Ponte Milvio, in Rome, in the name of their love. Since the book began very famous in Italy among teenagers, all lovers (all teenagers) began to hook their lockets on every bridge, everywhere in Italy: in Florence they began on Ponte Vecchio as well, wasting the beauty of the Art. It’s very difficult remove them, in fact. I hope this stupid behaviour will stop soon, but as I can see it’s common also in France now. It’s epidemic.

Information Architects – The 100% Easy-2-Read Standard

by emmanuelc (via)
Most websites are crammed with small text that’s a pain to read. Why? There is no reason for squeezing so much information onto the screen. It’s just a stupid collective mistake that dates back to a time when screens were really, really small. So…

CBC News - Montreal - Quebec sales tax goes up to 8.5%

by karlcow

Montreal retailer Yasmine Wasfy said she might start including sales tax in her ticketed prices, to soften the blow.

"We're hoping that it's going to be less of a sticker shock at the cash, once they come in, and they just know what they're spending."

Please. just. do. it. The not included taxes system of Qc is insane and stupid.

[ubuntu] Remove upstart - Page 2 - Ubuntu Forums

by night.kame

Yeah, I've got to chime in here. I've given upstart a chance for many versions now, as pointed out above. It is a nightmare. Its not more configurable, its less configurable and radically unstable, AND undocumented. Everything everyone used to claim about Linux is now true.

Upstart has taken away the benefit of running Linux machines. Unfortunately this is me and my boss talking. We've been searching for six hours now to try and figure out how to get one stinking runlevel to boot to the command line. All we can find is that its an all or nothing deal. Thats BS. Whos stupid idea was it to integrate gdm like that? And the answer isn't edit /etc/init/gdm.conf. That doesn't work. It gives a huge font and leaves you on the wrong tty.

Ubuntu : pour le plaisir de casser ce qui marche.

Timothy McSweeney's Internet Tendency: I'm Comic Sans, Asshole.

by sbrothier
Listen up. I know the shit you've been saying behind my back. You think I'm stupid. You think I'm immature. You think I'm a malformed, pathetic excuse for a font. Well think again, nerdhole, because I'm Comic Sans, and I'm the best thing to happen to typography since Johannes fucking Gutenberg.

How-to produce an online video Show: Export & compress. The blip.tv Learning Center.

by tadeufilippini & 1 other
Export When you finish editing your video it's time to prepare it for distribution by exporting it in a format that will work well on the Web. When you upload your video to blip.tv we will keep it just as it is — so make it good. We'll also create a new version of your video in Flash. If you're just starting out and using MovieMaker or iMovie, we recommend taking a look at Freevlog's excellent step-by-step video tutorials on exporting for the Web: Step-by-step exporting in MovieMaker | Step-by-step exporting in iMovie. The settings may not be exactly what you end up using, but don't worry, you can refine your skills once you get the hang of it. General Advice CODEC stands for COmpress/DECompress video. Key frames are frames that CODECs look at to judge what kind of video they are compressing. Video compression is somewhere between a science and a mystical art - and it changes constantly. The basic problem compression solves is that video is captured at resolutions way too high to be broadcast on the Web (at least for now). The video on a DVD or miniDV tape, would take hours to download on a high speed connection. Compression software called CODECs were invented to compress video, ideally down to a file size that looks great, and also transfers as fast as the video plays, so there's no wait. CODECs delete repeated and unneeded information by looking at Key Frames. They are constantly being improved, while at the same time the file size the Web can handle is constantly increasing. Once again, it's the audio stupid! High quality sound is the most bang for the buck in terms of small file size and ability to make your video look better. However it's not only the CODEC settings that affect quality and file size, the content of the video affects how well a CODEC works. The more complex the editing, subjects and backgrounds, the larger the file will be, REGARDLESS of the settings and CODEC you use. Err on the side of high quality, full frame rate and 640 or wider video and you'll be OK.

Some People Can’t Read URLs « Not The User’s Fault

by ghis & 1 other (via)
Reactions seem divided into two camps. One camp is having a great laugh at the stupidity of the users – after all, how could they look at a page with a red masthead, titled “ReadWriteWeb”, featuring a news article, and think they were on the Facebook login page? How could they be smart enough to figure out how to leave a comment, but too dumb to know what site they were on? The other camp, for example an article from blogger Funkatron called We’re the stupid ones is pointing the finger at the software world for assuming that everyone knows as much about computers as we do, and more specifically at Google – after all, isn’t this in some way Google’s screw-up for returning the wrong result?

Color Me A Dinosaur « Weather Sealed

by sbrothier
As we strolled down the sidewalk, we happened upon a stray green crayon. My kids still doodled with the familiar hues of my youth, but did other children? Or had they ditched that stupid stuff for a new-and-improved, perceptually-optimized, ISO-12647-2-compliant wax-based coloring system?

Review: Legion - Cinematical

by bouilloire
"Think of it this way: Legion is to the Bible as The Core is to a geology text book. The trailers may have you thinking that Legion looks silly and stupid but in a good way; a kind of cinematic junk food. It is not. It's worse than that. Legion is the cinematic equivalent of a Styrofoam cup." Déjà que je ne voulais pas le voir, là je crois que même "à l'occasion" ça ne se fera pas

The Age of Stupid

by HK & 1 other

What can you do if your daughter refuses to marry her rapist?? - The Landover Baptist Church Forums

by gregg, 2 comments
recently received a letter from a concerned parent. In the letter she told me that her daughter had been raped, but was refusing to marry her rapist as per Deuteronomy 22:28-29. The stupid girl actually wants to press charges on the man! Not only that, but that she also plans to kill the poor unborn baby her rapist had given her! Sickening! Have young people today got NO morals? Any and all advice on what I can say to convince this girl to do the right thing would be great. Should I start with the basics ? "Whore, you'll burn in Hell for all eternity - unless you marry your rapist"?? Or should I go for a more subtle approach??
