How I learned to stop worrying and love REST - Mike Mayo

by karlcow

By following the REST style, I would have saved myself either A) having to alter my iOS code and resubmit to the store, or B) time spent researching alternate caching methods and implementing them in Rails. As it stands, my partially-RESTful API is going to cost me (and possibly the client) more time before we can call the project finished.

Smart Pad pour iPad sur l’iTunes App Store

by oseres (via)
Smart Pad stands out among calendar apps because its power lies in its flexibility and in the level of detail...allowing users to easily switch between day and month views, or side-by-side views of a day’s schedule along with a list of tasks, notes, projects, or a history of completed tasks."

Facebook now stands as taking over a decade and a half of the dream of the World Wide Web and turning it into a miserable IT cube farm of pseudo human interaction, a bastardized form of e-mail, of mailing lists, of photo albums, of friendship.

Identity Crisis

by alamat & 1 other (via)
Up until recently I’ve been a very casual comic book reader. After reading various comics published by DC that mentioned “Identity Crisis” and finding it hard to avoid “spoilers” everywhere on the web I picked this up the day it was released to get caught up and find out what all the fuss was about. After closing the book, I was shocked about how much a “superhero book” could affect me emotionally. I had lost a very beloved family member a few days before reading this, and I’ll admit it did affect the way I viewed this book. But in looking back at it “cold”, I believe it stands incredibly well as a graphic novel, a tragic love story and a mystery.

LAUNCH Conference - Blog - LAUNCH002: What I Learned from Zuckerberg's Mistakes

by karlcow

Then it really hit me: Developer-driven startups always produce product faster. This stands to reason: our nontechnical people are having discussions and debates while Zuckerberg is coding his next feature. This is why no one has been able to keep up with Facebook!

The cost of social glue. Accepting mistakes will happen and take care of them when they happen or avoiding as much as possible the mistakes by a requirement document in advance.

It stands strong and true, resilient and universal as the markup you write. It shines as bright and as bold as the forward-thinking, dedicated web developers you are. It's the standard's standard, a pennant for progress. And it certainly doesn't use tables for layout.

1897 Bicycle Map of Montreal « Spacing Montreal

by karlcow

I was intrigued by the red square with "peloquin hotel". I found this

"A very large church, built in 1851, stands near the car track, and bears a strong resemblance to the celebrated St. Anne de Beaupre, near Quebec. The illustration shows one of the wayside shrines so numerous in the country parts of Quebec Province. This particular shrine (which has a figure of the Virgin in the turret on the roof) is placed on the road-side between Sault-aux-Recollets and Peloquin's. Peloquin is a name very well known to Montrealers, the hotel being one of the most popular outside of Montreal, and a favourite resort for bicycle clubs, driving parties, the Montreal Tandem Club, and the Montreal Hunt Club. Walter Benjamin’s Aura: Open Bookmarks and the future eBook | booktwo.org

by karlcow

So the real problem with the ebook as it stands is that it denies us many of these temporal aspects, which produces a kind of cognitive dissonance. And there’s a social layer that forms around this, another timeline of reading reviews and discussing with friends, that the ebook could actually exploit better than the physical book, if we work on it some more. We really need to look at how we address this temporal mode with ebooks.

TranslationManager/2 helps accelerate turnaround time and save money in overall translation costs. It does not only help you tackle the vast amount of translation needs efficiently, but also frees you from tedious routine work inherent to translation projects.

How-to produce an online video Show: Export & compress. The blip.tv Learning Center.

by tadeufilippini & 1 other
Export When you finish editing your video it's time to prepare it for distribution by exporting it in a format that will work well on the Web. When you upload your video to blip.tv we will keep it just as it is — so make it good. We'll also create a new version of your video in Flash. If you're just starting out and using MovieMaker or iMovie, we recommend taking a look at Freevlog's excellent step-by-step video tutorials on exporting for the Web: Step-by-step exporting in MovieMaker | Step-by-step exporting in iMovie. The settings may not be exactly what you end up using, but don't worry, you can refine your skills once you get the hang of it. General Advice CODEC stands for COmpress/DECompress video. Key frames are frames that CODECs look at to judge what kind of video they are compressing. Video compression is somewhere between a science and a mystical art - and it changes constantly. The basic problem compression solves is that video is captured at resolutions way too high to be broadcast on the Web (at least for now). The video on a DVD or miniDV tape, would take hours to download on a high speed connection. Compression software called CODECs were invented to compress video, ideally down to a file size that looks great, and also transfers as fast as the video plays, so there's no wait. CODECs delete repeated and unneeded information by looking at Key Frames. They are constantly being improved, while at the same time the file size the Web can handle is constantly increasing. Once again, it's the audio stupid! High quality sound is the most bang for the buck in terms of small file size and ability to make your video look better. However it's not only the CODEC settings that affect quality and file size, the content of the video affects how well a CODEC works. The more complex the editing, subjects and backgrounds, the larger the file will be, REGARDLESS of the settings and CODEC you use. Err on the side of high quality, full frame rate and 640 or wider video and you'll be OK.

Well-formed data » Visualizing survey results

by karlcow

Each circle sector stands for one person’s ratings, and these are ordered by their average rating. For each single rating, I draw a semi-transparent wedge, with distance from center as well as color indicating the rating’s value. Special treatment is provided for the overall event rating (a more opaque, smaller wedge). For visual spice, a black spline connects all the average values of the ratings.

main : SUPPORT STRUCTURES

by karlcow

Support Structures is a manual for what bears, sustains, props, and holds up. It is a manual for those things that encourage, give comfort, approval, and solace; that care for and provide consolation and the necessities of life. It is a manual for that which assists corroborates, advocates, articulates, substantiates, champions, and endorses; for what stands behind, underpins, frames, presents, maintains, and strengthens. Support Structures is a manual for those things that give, in short, support. While the work of supporting might traditionally appear as subsequent, unessential, and lacking value in itself, this manual is an attempt to restore attention to one of the neglected, yet crucial modes through which we apprehend and shape the world.
