Just south of Osaka Zoo is Tobita Shinchi, Japan’s... - Mrs Tsk *

by karlcow

When Google Streetview passed along the streets of Tobita Shinchi, it just happened — conveniently enough for the Japanese authorities — to be the early hours of New Year’s day 2010. Very few of the prostitutes were on show.

Roger Ballen directs Die Antwoord video | Photography | Agenda | Phaidon

by sbrothier
Obviously we're big fans of photographer Roger Ballen’s dark and disturbing black and white photographs here at Phaidon. So we were pleased to get a call from him this morning telling us about this music video he's just directed for Cape Town hip hop trio, Die Antwoord. The band's music is characterised by its Zef references (Zef being South African slang for modern and trashy, with lots of knowingly discarded cultural references). Ballen of course is famous for his psychologically charged and unsettling images from South Africa of individuals marginalised from society often depicted in the setting of strange, cell-like rooms. So how did the coupling come about?

Occupy Wall Street: where are the migrants? | openDemocracy

by karlcow

As a first-generation migrant in the United States, the demographics of the Occupy Wall Street Protest intrigues me just enough to notice that there are no conspicuous migrant populations protesting. Where in the so-called masses representing the 99% of America are the East-Asians and South-Asians from Asia? The West-African women from Africa or the Eastern-European men from Europe? This to me is a primary indicator of how heterogeneous the Occupy Wall Street campaign is in a locale as glaringly diverse as New York City in a nation built at the hands of migrant labour.

Pruned: Liquid DMZ

by karlcow

This is a familiar drill, as heavy rains often carry mines across the border. In fact, dozens of them washed up in South Korea last year, killing one and injuring another.

Saigon Opera House

by alamat & 1 other (via)
The Saigon Opera House (Vietnamese: Nhà hát lớn Thành phố Hồ Chí Minh), an opera house in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, is an example of French Colonial architecture in Vietnam. Built in 1897 by French architect Ferret Eugene, the 800 seat building was used as the home of the Lower House assembly of South Vietnam after 1956. It was not until 1975 that it was again used as a theatre, and restored in 1995.

NASA - Moonbase Alpha Overview

by shadoko
NASA has once again landed on the lunar surface with the goal of colonization, research, and further exploration. Shortly after the return to the Moon, NASA has established a small outpost on the south pole of the moon called Moonbase Alpha. Utilizing solar energy and regolith processing, the moonbase has become self-sufficient and plans for further expansion are underway. Moonbase Alpha Game ScreenShot -- Repairing the Life Support System Moonbase Alpha Game ScreenShot -- Repairing the Life Support System In Moonbase Alpha, you assume the exciting role of an astronaut working to further human expansion and research. Returning from a research expedition, you witness a meteorite impact that cripples the life support capability of the settlement. With precious minutes ticking away, you and your team must repair and replace equipment in order to restore the oxygen production to the settlement. Team coordination along with the proper use and allocation of your available resources (player controlled robots, rovers, repair tools, etc.) are key to your overall success. There are several ways in which you can successfully restore the life support system of the lunar base, but since you are scored on the time spent to complete the task, you have to work effectively as a team, learn from decisions made in previous gaming sessions, and make intelligence decisions in order to top the leaderboards.

Ki Musubi No Tachi | Takemusu Aikido South Africa | Aikido South Africa

by Takwann
“All Aikido techniques begin with blending movements. Tai-jutsu, the ken and jo techniques all begin with blending movements. This type of movement represents the essence of Aikido. We can learn this important principle through practice of the ken. We both raise our swords above our heads, matching movements. We have the feeling of absorbing the ki of the universe and we attempt to cultivate a mushin or self-less state in the same way as in zazen seated meditation. As his strike comes, I move off to the right and counter-strike. When he tries to raise his sword to attack me, I thrust him from below by matching his movement. Then, I avoid his strike moving to the left and strike him. He steps backward to raise his sword and I match his movement, cutting him at the wrist.” – Morihiro Saito Sensei

5 Kumi Tachi | Takemusu Aikido South Africa | Aikido South Africa

by Takwann
The kumi-tachi (kumi: to unite, group; tachi: sword) refers to advanced partner practice with the sword, encompassing 5 basic forms plus variations. The kumi exercises and their variations are the respective beginnings and the in-depth study of the martial applications of the basic training exercises. Associated with these exercises are strict rules of engagement based upon traditional fighting methods developed over centuries of use and refinement in a feudal society, and because they have a great practical basis they therefore dictate many of the reasons behind the movements. There is a great collection of variations that stem from these kihon (basics), due to the variables of combat, and the creativity of instructors. Once these exercises are properly learnt through slow, controlled and relaxed training, the movements can be performed more quickly and strongly, with the timing and flow varied to enable the student to experience a wide variety of possibilities in attack and defence.

7 Ken Suburi | Takemusu Aikido South Africa

by Takwann
“Among the basic ken practices left by the founder are the ki-musubi-no-tachi and the 5 kumi-tachi. Since the kumi-tachi are quite complicated, we must learn the basic 7 suburi in order to avoid becoming confused and to be able to safely practice the kumi-tachi. I formulated 7 suburi practices by selecting movements from the 7 kumi-tachi. We must practice the suburi a sufficient amount in order to execute the kumi-tachi safely.” – Morihiro Saito Sensei

Communities Dominate Brands: Lets Understand the Mobile Phone Market, installed base and smartphones vs dumbphones

by karlcow

The world sees sales of 1.37 Billion mobile phones sold in just this past year! Only 22% of all phones sold this year were smartphones. The other 78% were what now is a bit dismissively grouped as 'dumbphones', which includes anything from very high-end featurephones (many non-smartphone featurephones in Japan and South Korea have more features and abilities than the best smartphones known in the rest of the world) to mid-priced phones to the ultra-cheap basic 'Africa phones'.

On Language - Junk - NYTimes.com

by jeanruaud
. In a year that brought us vuvuzelas (the dronelike plastic horns at the World Cup in South Africa) and mama grizzlies (Sarah Palin’s cadre of fierce women in the midterm elections), there’s no obvious front-runner in the sweepstakes for WOTY (pronounced “WOE-tee”). But for my money, the one word that sums up the scrapheap of the past year is junk.

Nathan Kensinger Photography: The South Edgemere Wasteland

by karlcow

Edgemere is a Queens waterfront neighborhood split in two. In the north, residents live on the shores of Jamaica Bay. In the south, a vast plain covers more then 20 blocks of abandoned oceanfront. This city-owned wasteland is a part of the Arverne Urban Renewal Area, and may soon be redeveloped as Arverne East.
