Banksy's New Pixelated Sculpture: Cardinal Sin - My Modern Metropolis

by karlcow

Oh, the Catholic church won't be happy about this. Banksy just unveiled a brand new sculpture called Cardinal Sin which is a 18-century stone bust of a priest with its face sawn off and replaced by blank "pixelated" bathroom tiles. It was created as a response to the child abuse scandal in the Catholic church and its subsequent cover-up.

The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson - Free eBook

end to it. But there was one curious circumstance. I had taken a loathing to my gentleman at first sight. So had the child's family, which was only natural. But the doctor's case was what struck me. He was the usual cut and dry apothecary, of no particular age and colour, with a strong Edinburgh accent and about as emotional as a bagpipe. Well, sir, he was like the rest of us; every time he looked at my prisoner, I saw that Sawbones turn sick and white with desire to kill him. I knew what was in his mind, just as he knew what was in mine; and killing being out of the question, we did the next best. We told the man we could and would make such a scandal out of this as should make his name stink from one end of London to the other. If he had any friends or any credit, we undertook that he should lose them. And all the time, as we were pitching it in red hot, we were keeping the women off him as best we could for they were as wild as harpies. I never saw a circle of such hateful faces; and there was th

OCLC and the Great Library Scandal | booktwo.org

by karlcow

Why are our publicly funded libraries locked into a monopolistic relationship with a clearly greedy data supplier? Why are they paying thousands of pounds to access their own data? Why are the public, whose money is paying for this, locked out of the system?

Plutôt que de se battre sur le code source libre, les données *publiques* livres placées dans des silos, c'est plus dommageable.

French rally behind rogue trader as fraud scandal spreads | The Observer

by ravi
For Isabelle Mercier, 44, queuing outside a Société Générale branch in Paris, the 'rich and the powerful' always find someone to blame: 'Anyone who is a threat to them is eliminated one way or another.' Mohammed Benali, a market trader at the nearby Marché d'Aligre, agreed. 'It is time the bosses and the rich were taken down a peg,' he said.

Scandal Widens Over False Academic Credentials(The Korea Times)

by karlcow
Also, it is highly likely that the current slew of revelations would not have been possible without the ease with which personal information can be retrieved over the internet. An artist, or a celebrity's personal information, including his or her educational background, is only one click away from being obtained, and with the mob mentality of trying to find out the next liar the task becomes too easy.

Lijit

by cyberien & 10 others
Lijit Networks is developing a better way to search for information In real-life, people seek out advice from friends, co-workers, family, professionals, etc. Content is vetted though these social connections reducing the number of possibilities, and filtering for local relevance. This filtering is complex and it evolves through our entire lives. It is shaped by the experiences we have, the people we know, and the path that we take in life. What if searching on web worked the way it did in real-life? What if, you could search a person? A single search for ‘television’ through that person’s eyes could returns blog posts the person had authored as well as bookmarks they made of TV related content. What if, you could search a group of people, through a person? A single search for “childcare” would return a friend’s Blog post on childcare, bookmarks your friend and her friends made about local childcare providers and an online article from the local newspaper on a childcare scandal in your town…. What if, you could search a group of people and their connections, through a person? A single search for “dentist Boulder Colorado” would return bookmarks to the four dentists your friends use, the official site of an oral surgeon that your father knows from school, and articles from online journals that that the oral surgeon read last week.. Lijit is working on a revolutionary way to refine the search experience. Using the power of people, connections and information we can significantly enhance the way people search and discover information on the Internet.

Conservatives Weigh In On Foley Scandal And Embarrass Human Race

by GorillaSushi
In response to the Mark Foley scandal, the conservative side of the media seems to be twisting things into an anti-gay issue. I don't know why I'm so suprised that conservatives would turn so quickly on their own just to promote their own agenda...

Who knew Mark Foley was a closeted Democrat?

by jasontromm
At least liberals are finally exhibiting a moral compass about something. I am sure that they'd be equally outraged if Rep. Mark Foley were a Democrat. The object lesson of Foley's inappropriate e-mails to male pages is that when a Republican congressman is caught in a sex scandal, he immediately resigns and crawls off into a hole in abject embarrassment. Democrats get snippy. Foley didn't claim he was the victim of a "witch hunt." He didn't whine that he was a put-upon "gay American." He didn't stay in Congress and haughtily rebuke his critics. He didn't run for re-election. He certainly didn't claim he was "saving the Constitution."

Hastert must resign

by jasontromm
Republicans on Capitol Hill are desperately hoping to divert us from the Mark Foley scandal with a new storyline: Dem dirty tricks. Why did these disgusting e-mails come out just a few weeks before a critical election? It is true the party of Bill Clinton, Gerry Studds and Barney Frank is not going to clean out the sexual cesspool, but frankly I don't care: I'm not responsible for what they do. Rep. Dennis Hastert is a basically decent man who happens to head up a party that failed to investigate evidence that a GOP congressman (widely known among insiders to be gay) was seeking inappropriate contact with minor boys entrusted to his care. The Washington Times is right: He should resign his leadership post. ()() My question is what did the Democratic leadership know and when did they know it? Aren't they just as responsible? Maybe Nancy Pelosi should resign?

Sexual fascism and the Mark Foley scandal

by jasontromm
Apparently, Rep. Mark Foley is homosexual. And like many homosexual men, he likes young teen boys. We should pray for him that he gets a handle on this problem and refrains from harming any more kids. Meanwhile, we need to wake up. The fact that this is typical behavior for homosexuals doesn't stop us from continuing to elevate such folks to positions where they gain access to our kids.

A 46-year-old man is accused of assaulting his wife with a carrot, causing her to lose sight in one eye," It is a scandal that thanks to the carrot lobby, Americans--even the mentally ill, convicted criminals and stalkers--are able to buy these dangerous weapons without so much as a license or background check. We need carrot control! It's the only way to deal with crime at its roots.
