Even as the crime rate is dropping, the criminal justice system continues to grow. According to the Federal Bureau of Prisons, there will be 30 new federal prisons built over the next 7 years. Throughout this unprecedented growth, there have been few opportunities for critical examination of what is working and what isn't. It is our hope that this site will challenge your perceptions about who is in prison today and why. We also hope that it will generate ideas, big and small, about how we can reduce crime and strengthen our communities without continuing this unprecedented rate of incarceration. Over the next two years, we are continuing to work with educators and students to develop local dialogues in schools and communities. We will be partnering with radio producers and journalists across the country to tell stories about how crime and incarceration affects not just the people who are directly involved, but whole families and communities.

À brûle-pourpoint - blog de Didier da Silva

by karlcow

Are We Fast Yet? - PhobosLab

by karlcow

There are some things that the benchmark can't measure. Opera for instance has a very steady timing and never misses a frame. On my machine however, the benchmark still looks choppy - probably because the benchmark's timer isn't synchronized with the refresh rate of the display. Opera essentially renders frames that it never displays. The new requestAnimationFrame() could fix this, but it hasn't arrived in all browsers yet.

Rate This Article: What's Wrong with the Culture of Critique | Magazine

by karlcow, 3 comments

“Our culture is afflicted with knowingness,” he says. “We exalt in being able to know as much as possible. And that’s great on many levels. But we’re forgetting the pleasures of not knowing. I’m no Luddite, but we’ve started replacing actual experience with someone else’s already digested knowledge.”

The Britney Spears Problem - Stream Gauges

by karlcow

Suppose a pipeline delivers an endless sequence of nonnegative integers at a steady rate of one number every t time units. We want to build a device—call it a stream gauge—that intercepts the stream and displays answers to certain questions about the numbers.

Thoughts: On Agile Project Estimating and Pricing | Chris Blunt

by oseres
The usual approach to pricing service work is the hourly rate – a simple model that is easily understood, and translates well across different disciplines and businesses. Service work often has so many variables that an hourly rate seems to offer a good compromise between a fixed-price quote, and ensuring the supplier has flexibility to charge for unknown future work.

Outsourcing Statistics 2011

by personmark
Running an internet business alone is neither simple nor practical. Sooner or later there will have to be some help needed from experts who can be hired on a regular basis or from internet outsourcing companies which main focus is to give out help for others at a fraction of the usual cost. The need to outsource the different tasks are usually spearheaded by the need to have more time to do other things that need more attention, the need for someone better equipped to handle things like writing, web design, programming and maintenance, and even marketing promotions. Outsourcing the tasks to those who have more experience in these fields may not be painless, but it is definitely more practical. The first thing to do is to really find out what are those tasks that need to be accomplished in the least amount of time possible without costing too much stress on the wallet. Truthfully, some of these outsourcing companies may be expensive, but then, hiring a regular employee with half the skills will cost more because of the duties the employer has to give in exchange. Of course there are pros and cons to everything, especially in outsourcing. There are simply too many complaints written about the services these providers give and yet there are even more written articles on benefits that hiring companies have experienced. Some simply won’t even consider thinking of other options than outsourcing for they find that the benefits definitely outweigh the negative feedbacks. For one thing, outsourcing companies will only assign those who are trained to do specific tasks and usually never over rate themselves. This eliminates the time wasted on having to spend for the training of a new employee to get used to the system and having to spend on equipment to make the whole system work. Outsourcing companies are already fully equipped with the hardware, software and the gray matter. When it comes to highly skilled tasks like accounting, web design, programming and others, these outsourcing companies already have within their coffers their own staff with the necessary skills and they simply assign them over. The getting-to-know stage is limited to a few days up to a week, definitely a shorter amount of time than when hiring someone in office. Hiring and assigning of tasks are also done with ease and as the outsourcing companies rely on their volume and exchange of work, they are most likely never late in submitting their finished work. Eventually, the contractual work is easier on everyone in both accomplishing tasks and cost effectiveness. Working with these offshore companies means that one has to always contend with language, cultural, time schedule and other barriers. It is always best to make arrangements for the time to make communication and submission of accomplished tasks. Because these outsourcing companies are based in countries that depend on the monetary exchange rates, they are also most likely to offer up the least amount of rates. These rates are the considerations that have to be examined, if the rates are lower compared to other companies, they are most likely not the good companies that most are relying on. There are a lot of fly-by-night companies that are overrated and only hire under-skilled personnel.

Kingdom Come Paperback

by alamat & 1 other (via)
Kingdom Come is a tough book to rate. On the one hand, it does possess level of depth that sets it far above most “comic books” on the newsstand. On the other, such depths as you will find are, to be brutally honest, entirely – yes, entirely – derivative of what Alan Moore had already given us in Watchmen more than a decade earlier.

BIB - Buzz références littéraires - Quand "#bibliolefebvre" inspire des bibliothécaires… à la Bibliothèque de Fresnes

by decembre

Why the Nexus S has NFC – Google Places window stickers are NFC enabled

because the window stickers that come with them feature near field communications (NFC) built right in that includes information about the business on its Places pages (and we’re guessing will allow users to do things such as rate the venue as well).

NFC is the cookies of the physical world.

Both glides were filmed by sticking a – relatively cheap – digital camera out of the window of a train as it arrived at a station. The ‘trick’ is the camera collects images at a rate of 210 per second – but the film is played back at 30 frames per second. So, every seven seconds of footage that you watch corresponds to 1 real second.

How to Make a Screencast for Your Website | Webdesigner Depot

by oseres (via)
Having a video on your website can vastly improve your conversion rate. Whether the goal is for users to sign up for your web application or simply to get users to contact you via a web form, a video improves the likelihood of this happening. You need only go to the home page of any new Internet-based startup, and you’ll see an embedded video with a very large call to action beckoning you to play its two- or three-minute video introduction. Videos that demonstrate web applications or web-based services are often called screencasts because they usually capture events on the company’s website. These screencasts can sum up in just two minutes what might otherwise take up many pages to explain, so they make for powerful additions to websites. Is it easy to make a screencast? How much does it cost, and what tools are required? Let’s answer these questions.

Rethinking Wikipedia contributions rates | eaves.ca

by karlcow

karl dubost 0 minutos atrás I guess there are other things which might influence than only the raw number of participations. The social dynamic of Wikipedia system has evolved. The rules (like any communities) have strengthened and are more rigid than what they were in the past. It is basically more and more painful to create content for Wikipedia. As an occasional editor, I'm less and less inclined to make the effort to contribute because the article might go quickly under "Articles for Deletion" hammer.

Interesting thing to look at:

1. Timeline of Articles for Deletion (raw number and % of how many new articles)

2. Deletion compared to new contributors (stable, going down, going up)

3. Timeline should also plot the milestones of new editing rules.

4. The rate of new articles creation compared to the number of contributors.

These could drive to new processes, maybe there is a need for a better drafting tool that will help an article to reach a stage of maturity to be part of Wikipedia, and this will create another set of behaviours ;) Not a closed system.
