In the physical world, IOP projects may take the form of sculptures, exhibitions or installations, using curation itself as a medium. In its projects, IOP pursue reflection around the modes of presentation and exhibition, using text and suggestive means to add insight to their work.

Buy Cilice

by gregg
cilice was originally a garment or undergarment made of coarse cloth or animal hair (a hairshirt). In more recent times the word has come to refer not to a hairshirt, but to a spiked metal belt or chain worn strapped tight around the upper thigh. Many religious orders within the Roman Catholic Church have used the cilice as a form of "corporal mortification," but in recent years it has become known as a practice of numeraries (celibate lay people) of Opus Dei, a personal prelature of the Roman Catholic Church.

THE THING Quarterly is a periodical in the form of an object. It's like a magazine, except that each issue is conceived of by a different contributor and then published on a useful object.

Instagram and Flickr, the one where I refine my argument « Rev Dan Catt's Blog

by karlcow

Yep, comments seem a bit of an anachronism nowadays. I think I’ll probably turn them off on my blog too, when I get round to deploying the new version I’ve half-finished. I miss the long-form responses though. Tweet responses can be hard to follow with the character limit forcing over-simplicity. That’s one of the nice things about Google+, although it’d be nicer still to make more of a return to personal blogs.

Predicting the Future of Computing - Interactive Feature - NYTimes.com

by sbrothier
Since no supercomputer can yet predict the future, we need your help. Readers are invited to make predictions and collaboratively edit this timeline, which is divided into three sections: a sampling of past advances, future predictions that you can push forward or backward in time (but not, of course, into the past), and a form for making and voting on predictions. The most prescient prophet might receive an iPad 2 in 2050. But if the past is any guide, this prediction will almost surely be wrong.

Japan: I am Isolated in My Workplace · Global Voices

by karlcow

“The Internet can be a saving grace if you’re isolated in your school or workplace.” - This was a remark from my recent interview with Izumi Mihashi from Lingua Japanese. I was reminded of it when chancing upon a poignant cry in the form of an anonymous blog entry [ja]. Bullying doesn’t stop at the schoolyard.

Codex » Info

by sbrothier
Codex is a weekly music podcast hosted by Jean Snow, recorded in Tokyo, Japan. A long, long time ago in a country far, far away (that would be Canada) he used to have a college radio show. He had two of them, actually, first when he was truly a university student — believe it or not, it was called The Jean Snow Show — and then 10 years ago when he was back in Canada for a year, he did another show on the same station (CKUM) which he decided to call Codex (for reasons that have long been forgotten). He’s long missed those days of hosting a weekly music show — in a proper studio — and although he can’t replicate that same environment, he’s recently started doing similar but on the net, in podcast form.

More graffiti than guesthouses! « Constructing Cambodia

by karlcow

The lakeside backpacker alley has seen better days. Every week, another restaurant, home or guesthouse is demolished. What remains is frustration in the form of graffiti. This alley has not felt creepier and run-down in years. Better look for the next backpacker ghetto (my bet’s around Orussei)

DingoAccess » Measuring accessibility

by Monique

There has been much discussion, and some arguments, about how to determine the accessibility of websites. Unfortunately, this is often polarised around two simplistic choices: A compliance/conformance based approach that usually involves a checklist of criteria; or, some form of user testing by people who have different disabilities and/or who rely on different assistive technologies. Both approaches have their strength and limitations, and neither can provide a reliable declaration about the accessibility of a site on its own.

Tokyo metabolizing creates vision for Tokyo as new urban form « Tokyo Green Space

by karlcow

In Tokyo the average household is less than 2 people, and these smaller households seek new connections with neighbors, colleagues, and friends. I think the most radical suggestion is that an awareness of other people living around you might be considered a positive feature rather than something to be concealed or suppressed.
