A precursor to Alexander’s A Pattern Language, in which he and Chermayeff define what’s wrong with the design of the suburbs, and outline the principles behind a more human (and urban) environment. As interesting for its approach to the problem as it is for any of the proposed solutions.

dretblog: Creating Resources with GET/PUT

by karlcow

here is the proposed sequence of steps in this scenario: clients GET the template and a token from the factory resource. since this operation does not change server state, it is safe and idempotent and it is possible to use GET. clients PUT to the token URI, at which point the server creates and populates the resource at the repository level, and keeps track of the token from which the resource has been created. the server responds with a 303 (See Other) response, indicating the persistent URI of the resource. subsequent requests to the token URIs are handled with a 301 (Moved Permanently) response, telling clients that the token URI should no longer be used, and that a persistent URI is now available.

Emoji Symbols: Background Data

by sbrothier
This document reflects proposed Emoji symbols data as shown in FDAM8 which includes the disposition of FPDAM8 ballot comments and changes agreed during the San José WG2 meeting 56. The carrier symbol images in this file point to images on other sites. The images are only for comparison and may change. See the chart legend for an explanation of the data presentation in this chart. In the HTML version of this document, each symbol row has an anchor to allow direct linking by appending #e-4B0 (for example) to this page's URL in the address bar.

Habitable Polyhedron / Manuel Villa | ArchDaily

by karlcow

The project, meant for a family house back yard in the suburbs, aimed at designing a small park or opened area where the young parents and their newborn child would enjoy a independent space from day to day house activities, a space for reading, playing, etc. Having in mind this objective, and considering the usages of the space in the long term, it was proposed the project incorporated a small building to complement and support outside activities. That way he building would serve as a shelter for the child to share with his parents and, later on, as his own personal activities and hobbies setting.

It is designed to help you learn not only a new language but anything that can be learnt! This aim is achieved by using the widely used method, called Leitner System, and the idea of "different card types for different purposes". Leitner System (proposed by Sebastian Leitner in the 1970s) is one the most efficient methods for learning. Which allows you to focus on the most difficult flashcards and not waste your time on what you have already learnt.

Maps with the road coloring problem « optional.is/required

by karlcow

The road coloring problem is proposed as a graph theory problem, but once you understand it, the applications can be stretched into other disciplines. What the conjecture asks is: using a single set of instructions, is it possible to reach or located a destination from any other point within the network.

[ubuntu-art] Karmic boot and login - proposed designs Mat Tomaszewski mat.tomaszewski at canonical.com Mon Aug 10 14:55:43 BST 2009 * Previous message: [ubuntu-art] New Version of Night Impression * Next message: [ubuntu-art] Karmic boot and login - proposed designs * Messages sorted by: [ date ] [ thread ] [ subject ] [ author ] Hi, Not so long ago we announced the revamp of boot and login experiences in Ubuntu and received a great response from the Artwork Team, with many interesting concepts being submitted. Thanks again for all your hard work. The deadline approaches fast and the time is now to make final decisions. We have just returned from the Platform Sprint in Dublin, where folks directly responsible for making Ubuntu release happen on time have gathered. The design team's role was to propose final concepts, communicate them to the developers and make sure they can be implemented on time. We have received a lot of valuable feedback and revised our proposals accordingly. The initial assumptions, however, remain unchanged. The Foundations Team's goal is to start the X server as fast as possible (3-4 seconds on a reference machine) and therefore, Usplash will not be used in most cases. A new splash screen (Xsplash) will be developed on top of the X server and enable a smooth transition into the GDM and the user session. The latest designs can be viewed here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Incoming/Karmic/Boot/Demo. We're looking forward to your feedback! Many thanks, Mat * Previous message: [ubuntu-art] New Version of Night Impression * Next message: [ubuntu-art] Karmic boot and login - proposed designs * Messages sorted by: [ date ] [ thread ] [ subject ] [ author ] More information about the ubuntu-art mailing list

The AI Report - Forbes.com

by parmentierf
Can machines think? In 1950, Alan Turing, considered by some to be the father of modern computing, published a paper in which he proposed that, "If, during text-based conversation, a machine is indistinguishable from a human, then it could be said to be 'thinking' and, therefore, could be attributed with intelligence." He predicted that a computer would pass this "Turing Test" by the end of the century. That hasn't happened--yet. But the question continues to provoke and inspire. AI might be just around the corner, or it might be centuries away.

Color-Structured Image Search - Microsoft Research

Color-Structured Image Search

Jingdong Wang, Xian-Sheng Hua, and Yinghai Zhao

6 July 2009

In this paper, we propose a novel interactive image ranking technique, color-structured image search, by exploiting color spatial relation information, and demonstrate it in image research results refinement. This technique enables users to draw a few color strokes, called target color structure, to indicate the intent. Beyond the conventional image retrieval methods based on query by image content that simply view the target color structure as an image and compute the similarity merely according to the spatial correspondence criterion, the proposed method represents the target color structure using a set of spatially relational colors, and evaluates the similarities between target color structure and image color structure by exploiting their spatial correspondence information, and an extra novel criterion, the consistency of spatial relation of colors implied in target color structure, and even offering a scheme to handle the uncertainty of target color structure. This similarity evaluation process can be accomplished efficiently. Moreover, a convenient interactive interface is presented to allow users to specify target color structure flexibly. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed approach.

BLDGBLOG: Sand/Stone

by karlcow

For an ambitious landscape design project, Magnus Larsson, a student at the Architectural Association in London, has proposed a 6,000km-long wall of artificially solidified sandstone architecture that would span the Sahara Desert, east to west, offering a combination of refugee housing and a "green wall" against the future spread of the desert.

Wireless in the world

by karlcow

Using simple abstractions such as the dashed line and the kinds of visual language that we have previously proposed for RFID allow us to quickly communicate aspects such as the spatial properties of wireless technologies that are often overlooked. I’ve been using these images in presentations for a while, to sensitise designers and students to the spatial and embodied properties of RFID, Bluetooth and WIFI.

GetPingd | Google Groups

by greut (via)

Many web resources provide mechanisms for subscribing to changes in their content. However, this change information is only made available via a polling mechanism.

A number of people have proposed mechanisms for subscribing to updates to pages or feeds, however, a missing element of all these proposals is a subscription mechanism. Sadly, this means that every site supporting this feature will likely end up with a different implementation.
