Roger Ballen directs Die Antwoord video | Photography | Agenda | Phaidon

by sbrothier
Obviously we're big fans of photographer Roger Ballen’s dark and disturbing black and white photographs here at Phaidon. So we were pleased to get a call from him this morning telling us about this music video he's just directed for Cape Town hip hop trio, Die Antwoord. The band's music is characterised by its Zef references (Zef being South African slang for modern and trashy, with lots of knowingly discarded cultural references). Ballen of course is famous for his psychologically charged and unsettling images from South Africa of individuals marginalised from society often depicted in the setting of strange, cell-like rooms. So how did the coupling come about?

Moving The Web Forward « Paul Irish

by karlcow, 2 comments

Hi, Paul. Actually, I tweeted about "Move the Web Forward" on Blue Beanie Day the moment I saw it, and I linked to it from Facebook and Google+, but carry on with the character assassination. I tweeted about it without knowing who was behind it (doesn't matter), and without being *entirely* clear what it was about (you have some copy problems I would have been glad to help with). I was pleased to discover this blog post as I thought, "Ah, now I can reach out to the people behind that site and help them publicize it more" but then, a few paragraphs in, I saw your shitty little whiney character assassination of me (quoted above) and thought, oh, well. Why do you do this to yourself? Why do you create something nice and then shit on someone else? What kind of behavior is that? You did the same thing when you complained about A List Apart even though we've reached out to you for *three years* asking you for content and input. Calling something on the web crap is always a childish move, particularly when that thing is open and your feedback and content have been solicited for it many times. I gather you have some unexplained grudge against me. Or against the young dude in Ireland who created some web standards buttons for fun. If you think my help of his project is how I earn my living, you need to get out of the cubicle more. I'm usually polite to everyone, even very rude people, but you're being both whiney *and* a dick, which is a hard combo most people to pull off (fortunately most people don't try). Your project looks cool and could benefit from outside help, but I won't be helping because you are an asshole. You are, I think, the only asshole I've met in 20 years of doing web work. Fuck off.

Stack Overflow Search — Now 81% Less Crappy - Blog – Stack Overflow

by night.kame & 1 other

Although our de-crapifying efforts have been noble and heroic (well, in my mind, anyway), we’ve clearly begun to exceed the scope and scale of what SQL Server search can do for us.

That’s why I’m pleased to announce that as of today, we have switched all of our search functionality network wide from SQL Server to Lucene, or more specifically, the Lucene.NET flavor.

Typographic Maps - Axis Maps LLC - Cartography. Visualization. Design.

by sbrothier & 1 other
Axis Maps is pleased to announce the release of our mapping / art project Typographic Maps. Created as a labor of love, these unique maps accurately depict the streets and highways, parks, neighborhoods, coastlines, and physical features of the city using nothing but type. Only by manually weaving together thousands upon thousands of carefully placed words does the full picture of the city emerge. Every single piece of type was manually placed, a process that took hundreds of hours to complete for each map. Take a look at our blog for more on how these maps were made.

stamen design | Quova: Trying something new

by karlcow

Mike has done this kind of thing before, blogging about crimespotting as it was being developed, but it's a harder thing to do with paying clients who generally need to be the first to announce to the world that a project is going live. So I'm really pleased that Quova's agreed to make this process public.

KubuntuKarmicNetbook - Ubuntu Wiki

by tadeufilippini (via)
* KubuntuKarmicNetbook You are here: Kubuntu Wiki » KubuntuKarmicNetbook * Launchpad Entry: kubuntu-karmic-netbook-edition * Created: June 1, 2009 * Contributors: ScottK, Tonio, other Kubuntu devs * Packages affected: kubuntu-default-settings, possibly a new plasma-netbook-shell package Summary Provide, as a technology preview for Karmic, a new minor *buntu flavor, Kubuntu Netbook Edition. KDE4 is designed from the ground up to be scalable to many form factors. Many Kubuntu users are already using it in netbook computers. The intent is to make it easy for Kubuntu to just work. Release Note This release includes a new member of the Ubuntu family, Kubuntu Netbook Edition. This variant of Kubuntu is aimed at netbooks and other small form factor devices. Rationale Netbooks appear to be growing in popularity. An install image optimized for this form factor would be great for users and may have some commercial potential. KDE 4 is designed to be scalable and is easily adjusted to new form factors. It may be particularly useful to have in the *buntu stable in cases where a quick turn around for a particular device type is needed. User stories Jane has used Kubuntu for years and wants it on her new netbook. She is pleased to find Kubuntu Netbook Edition gives her a familiar environment scaled to her new device. Klaus has a new netbook device coming to market with an exciting new form factor. He needs an OS for it, but needs it soon. With a little help, he's able to ship on time and on budget with Kubuntu Netbook Edition. Assumptions None. The settings changes have been prototyped and the plasma-netbook shell will only be included if it is mature. Design Test various settings such and font and panel sizes in the netbook form factor to determine good settings for smaller systems. Test and integrate plasma-netbook shell if ready. Implementation Implementation will have three major parts Settings Changes A new Kubuntu default settings netbook package will be needed along with a netbook metapackage for this edition (in Universe for Karmic) New Flavour Setup A kubuntu netbook seed will need to be created. Image builds for i386 will be needed. Plasma Netbook Shell If it is ready, the plasma Netbook shell will be packaged and used as the default front end for Kubuntu Netbook Edition. It is currenlty in heavy development and likely to be ready for Karmic. * http://techbase.kde.org/Projects/Plasma/Plasma-Netbook * http://www.notmart.org/index.php/BlaBla/put_a_net_in_your_book * http://www.notmart.org/index.php/Software/Plasmanetbook_breaths Some patching of kdelibs/base/plasma-addons is needed (and doable before feature freeze) to support Plamsa Netbook in KDE 4.3. Test/Demo Plan Images will need to be thoughly tested before release. We will encourage people to test these on netbook and full form hardware. Unresolved issues Inclusion of Plasma Netbook shell TBD pending testing. (Field)

by karlcow

— a development environment for making digital art

Field is an open-source software project initiated by OpenEnded Group, for the creation of their digital artworks. It is an environment for writing code to rapidly and experimentally assemble and explore algorithmic systems. It is visual, it is hybrid, it is code-based. We think that it has something to offer a diverse range of programmers and artists.

Based on ideas started at the MIT Media Lab, Field was in development in-house for around 6 years. But for the last 16 months it has been quietly available online as an open source project. We are pleased to announce the initial "beta" binary open-source releases for Intel-based Macs OS X 10.5 or 10.6.

Learning from Shogun

by Takwann
Learning from SHOGUN was distributed by the Japan Society of New York through the good offices of Peter Grilli, and two printings quickly sold out. The authors are pleased to make it available here in PDF format for interested readers and teachers, but please remember that this is copyrighted material and may not be reproduced for more than personal or instructional use. Note that the PDF version is bookmarked for easy access to the separate chapters. We also want to emphasize that Learning from SHOGUN is about Clavell's novel, not about either the TV miniseries or the feature film versions. A postscript to the book does offer my own first impressions of the miniseries, however, of which I was able to see a preview before it appeared on national television.

Create a Photo Admin Site Using PHP and jQuery - NETTUTS

by camel & 2 others (via)
I'm pleased to present you with part one of a two part series on creating a photo site using PHP, jQuery, and AJAX. Originally, I intended to fit the entire tutorial into one screencast, but that quickly became a pipe dream as I realized that there was simply too much to cover. Nevertheless, even if you only watch this first video, you should learn a great deal. We'll be retrieving images from a database, creating a simple login form with authentication, and will then allow for our database to be asynchronously updated. Sounds good? If so, let's get into it.
