Daring Fireball Linked List: Sony, Too

by night.kame

Sony should no more abandon the point-and-shoot camera market than Apple should abandon the music-playing iPod market, but Sony has to recognize that it’s a business in decline and that the future is in putting better cameras into phones.

Nous dit le type qui n'a visiblement jamais eu un téléphone Sony-Ericsson dans les mains.

ASCII by Jason Scott / Javascript Hero: Change Computer History Forever

by night.kame

But on the whole I am primarily dealing with artifacts and not experience.  A number of people have done some good work to bring in experience of computer history, most notably the Emulator People. In fact, if you don’t go too crazy on the rococo specifics of the accuracy of emulators, they do really really well to take you from “I wonder what it was like to play Choplifter” to “Wow, I am playing Choplifter“. And as someone sitting in the channels of several emulation projects, I will tell you they are all getting better, every single day – improvements in speed, accuracy, flexibility and expandability.

So here is what I’d like to do.

I want to help port the MESS and MAME emulators to Javascript.

Bonjour le boulot pour émuler correctement les systèmes multi-processeurs ou à co-processeurs, et encore plus pour les systèmes sans horloge (pas que la gestion des timings en Javascript soit boulversante...)

Introducing: Evernote Peek, The First iPad Smart Cover App « Evernote Blogcast

by sbrothier
Several months ago, Phil and I were sitting in a plane playing around with the just-released iPad 2. Of all its features, the thing that floored us was the ingenious Smart Cover. It didn’t seem like an accessory so much as an extension of the device. As we sat there opening and closing the cover, a question struck us: could we use the cover to control an app that would make Evernote even more useful?

Contact George

by gregg (via)
Are you ready? Meet George, a REAL guy with a really weird connection, a connection that lets you enter his world and interact with him as he tries to go on with his daily activities. What will you do next? You can be nice and just talk to him or tickle him or you can start annoying by poking him, screaming at him, squeezing him, holding your finger on him, shaking his room, making him loose balance and fall to the ground or playing tricks on him using various objects. You get to break his daily routine and mess with his mornings, while he is at the office, relaxing at home and even when he is asleep. He will try his best to make you smile.

James Patterson's Catch a Killer on Facebook is rated 'M' for mature - Blog.games.com

by gregg
James Patterson's new Facebook game Catch a Killer is being billed as the first 'mature' game on the social network. And once you start playing, that's all too apparent. The mystery game - created by the prolific author in conjunction with Sony Online Entertainment - features piles of dead bodies, blood spattered around locations like a Jackson Pollack painting and interrogation subjects who drop the occasional four letter word.

The Internet of Offices (detail) | Flickr : partage de photos !

by karlcow

We've got some shared AirTunes speakers in the office and I'm always curious what people are playing. So I hacked together a python script that watches tcpdump wifi traffic to figure out which MAC address is currently streaming, looks up their Last.fm name in an offline mapping and posts it to a toy web site. From there, there's some javascript to look up their currently playing track and show it on a screen.

Google Analytics for WordPress version 4 - Yoast

by mozkart (via)
Google Analytics has gotten so many new features in the last year, that the only way I could incorporate those into my Google Analytics plugin, which has been downloaded 1,006,720 times, was by doing an almost complete rewrite. That’s why today, I’m proud to announce version 4.0 of this plugin. What’s new with this Google Analytics plugin? Asynchronous tracking First of all, this new version 4.0 switches to the new asynchronous tracking method. This new tracking was also the reason it took a while to get this version out the door: there were quite a few bugs to work out; tracking by the beta was not reliable for a while. What’s the advantage of the new tracking you ask? Why bother switching? Well, there are three reasons, as listed by the Google Analytics blog: Faster load times for your web pages due to improved browser execution of the tracking code. Enhanced data collection & accuracy. Elimination of tracking errors from dependencies when the JavaScript hasn't fully loaded. If you want to know more about asynchronous scripts, check out this blog post by Steve Souders, in which he explains the concept and what it means for page load times. The short version: a normal script blocks other objects on your page, like images, from being loaded until it has been fully loaded. An asynchronous script allows for those other objects to be downloaded at the same time. Custom Variables Google launched the custom variable support in October 2009, and I’ve been playing with ways to use these in tracking ever since. Custom variables are a way to add data about the current page, the current session or the current user in your tracking, which you can use for some very cool things.
