Insane Entitlement: EMI Sues Irish Gov't For Not Passing SOPA-Like Censorship Law | Techdirt

by karlcow

major record label EMI (in the process of being acquired by Universal Music to make it the largest record label by far) is suing the Irish government because it feels the Irish government is taking too long to pass a SOPA-like law that would require ISPs to censor the internet and block access to sites it doesn't like.

Mobile API Design - Thinking Beyond REST — Stereoplex

by karlcow

There are some broken HTTP clients out there. I've run into one: Flash (circa 2009). Flash gets upset if it doesn't receive a 200 response from the server. In particular, if your server returns a 4xx HTTP code in an API response, Flash will not even pass the response to the Flash application.

Monitoring Israeli Colonization Activities

by sbrothier
Monitoring Israeli Colonizing activities in the Palestinian West Bank and Gaza is a joint project between the Applied Research Institute in Jerusalem (ARIJ) and the Land Research Center (LRC). The project, funded by the European Union, aims at inspecting and scrutinizing Israeli colonizing activities in their different forms in the Palestinian West Bank and Gaza, and to disseminate the related information to policy makers in the European countries and to the general public. Specifically, the project will be providing accurate updates on the expansion of existing Israeli colonies, associated by-pass roads and land confiscation. It will also provide detailed baseline data related to specific sites where new Israeli colonizing activities are planned or initiated. Methods used to collect data and monitor the colonizing activities will include remote sensing satellite images, field work, aerial photographs, colonies' masterplans, and topographic maps.

Why install time permissions suck. Why we wanted access to contacts in the Walmart app on Dion Almaer's Blog

by night.kame

Interestingly, on webOS, things are the other way around – any app can display the “People Picker” allowing the user to select a single contact to pass to the app, but there’s no way for an app to gain permission to read all contacts.

Street View time-lapse (Los Angeles) | Flickr - Photo Sharing!

by karlcow

I started off using a sample from Google's code repository, modified the

javascript to load a php page via an iframe. For each stop in the driving directions I

pass the php page the panoid, iterator, etc.

and construct the urls to the 21 tiles,

download them and call:montage $tempTilesdir/* -tile 7x3 -geometry

128x128 $basedir/$itr.jpg"Each tile sized down from 512x512 resulting

in the equirectangular panorama at 896x384

(easier to work with when there are a few

hundred frames).Once the driving directions reach the

destination I call:ffmpeg -f image2 -i %d.jpg -s 896x384 -r 5 -b

2000kbs $basedir/$datestamp_5-2000.aviWhich generates an avi encapsulated movie,

mpeg-4 encoded @ 2000kbs (5fps)I'd be interested in collaborating on

projects. PM with what you have going on.

thx.

Small Acts Manifesto

by ghis
"We are discovering better ways of building communities by connecting people. Through this endeavor we have come to value: Trust - which must be respected and never put at risk; Dialog - is the way to establish a truly trustful relationship; Personal Contact - the richest experience, not matched by any media or technology; Transparency - the mean to maintain a sustainable community; Diversity - people have many interests, but if you need a label, label yourself as a human; Self-organization - leaders emerge, but there should be no owners; Example - that's how you must teach, live and learn; Consistency - things take time, intensity is not always the answer; Give, give, give! - you'll be impressed by how fast things will come back; Do it! - as simple as you can, just what is essential to pass it forward."

Tor FAQ

by oseres (via)
How is Tor different from other proxies? A typical proxy provider sets up a server somewhere on the Internet and allows you to use it to relay your traffic. This creates a simple, easy to maintain architecture. The users all enter and leave through the same server. The provider may charge for use of the proxy, or fund their costs through advertisements on the server. In the simplest configuration, you don't have to install anything. You just have to point your browser at their proxy server. Simple proxy providers are fine solutions if you do not want protections for your privacy and anonymity online and you trust the provider from doing bad things. Some simple proxy providers use SSL to secure your connection to them. This may protect you against local eavesdroppers, such as those at a cafe with free wifi Internet. Simple proxy providers also create a single point of failure. The provider knows who you are and where you browse on the Internet. They can see your traffic as it passes through their server. In some cases, they can see your encrypted traffic as they relay it to your banking site or to ecommerce stores. You have to trust the provider isn't doing any number of things, such as watching your traffic, injecting their own advertisements into your traffic stream, and isn't recording your personal details. Tor passes your traffic through at least 3 different servers before sending it on to the destination. Tor does not modify, or even know, what you are sending into it. It merely relays your traffic, completely encrypted through the Tor network and has it pop out somewhere else in the world, completely intact. The Tor client is required because we assume you trust your local computer. The Tor client manages the encryption and the path chosen through the network. The relays located all over the world merely pass encrypted packets between themselves.

Sword tip movement - AikiWeb Aikido Forums

by Takwann
I've become obsessed with my sword cuts as of late. One thing has been driving me nuts for well over a year. When I swing my sword, watching my cuts in a mirror, I just can't seem to get the tip of the sword to go straight. It moves, ever so slightly, side to side as it goes down. It's super minor, but I can't stop thinking about it, which is probably making it worse! What I tend to do is stare at my own eyes in the mirror and try and swing the sword to pass between my eyes in the mirror. I think I'd equate it to shooting a rifle or a bow and arrow and having the shakes. Has anyone else experienced this and been able to steady yourself?

iTravel: Apple's Future Travel Centric App for the iPhone - Patently Apple

by sbrothier
Christina Warrens of Mashable covered our iTunes Concert Ticket + report last week and added that "Delta Airlines, which is headquartered in my hometown, supports digital boarding passes at some of its bigger airports. I love this because it is one less thing to print out and one fewer line to stand in for a boarding pass." Well, Apple appears to agree with that thinking because they're working on a new travel check-in application that they're simply calling "iTravel." Apple is obviously working with the Airlines to ensure that the iPhone will be up to standard when new ticketless systems roll out in the coming years. Apple's iTravel focuses on such matters as airline check-in and baggage identification, advanced electronic ID, car rentals, hotel and airline reservations and so forth. Apple's iTravel is yet another Near Field Communications based application within a host of recent revelations. It would appear, at least on the surface – that Apple may be working on a new suite of NFC related applications for a future iPhone. Perhaps such a suite could be ready by the time they roll out their iPhone 4G next year.

Simple DirectMedia Library Bindings for Perl

by sylvainulg
would you like to code graphical things in Perl ? Well, it took me 11 CPAN package to install manually, some of which turns out to have version conflicts, with no clear benefit but to be able to rebuild SDL from source in Build.PL. At the end fo the day, the SDL-2.530 perl module doesn't pass the tests. Time has been wasted, unfortunately

Ogura Noboru Hanshi’s comments on Iaido: technical proficiency and spiritual growth | social-issues.org online community

by Takwann
For Ogura Sensei, those who quit Iaido when they fail a promotional exam may have the wrong goal. Of course, it is crucial for disciples to work hard, trying to gain mastery of physical movements and pass a grading, but Iaido is much more than technical proficiency, he remarked. Simply stated, the essential core value of Iaido is about cultivating oneself and becoming a better being, entailing daily commitment, eagerness, and perseverance. The essence of Iaido or the spirit of mononofu (meaning “all what relates to being a samurai”) is to acquire a harmonious spirit and to learn about respect and consideration for others.

OK Go – This Too Shall Pass : Un vidéo clip à la « The Incredible Machine ». Une variante de la chute de dominos avec tout et n'importe quoi : dément! | Semageek

by decembre

Microsoft, you should be ashamed - <Glazblog/>

by srcmax (via)

Yes. And despite the very nice IE 9 preview that shows real progress on Web Standards. I just found that page that shows, holly miracle, that MSIE9 Preview passes 100% of the tests written by... the IE team and submitted to the W3C. Isn't that cool? Isn't that cool to show that IE9 passes these tests while other browsers don't? It easily forgets that there are thousands of other tests that IE does not pass, that there are tons of specs that Mozilla, Webkit and Opera all implement but not Microsoft...

Colour Contrast Check - snook.ca

by dzc & 31 others
The Colour Contrast Check Tool allows to specify a foreground and a background colour and determine if they provide enough of a contrast "when viewed by someone having color deficits or when viewed on a black and white screen"[W3C]. The tool will indicate that the colours pass the test if both the colour difference and the brightness difference exceed their threshold. It will indicate that it sort of passes if only one of the two values exceed their threshold. And finally, it'll fail to pass if neither value exceeds its threshold. The tool will also indicate if the colours pass the newer WCAG 2.0 contrast ratio formula. The WCAG 2.0 formula differentiates between text smaller than 18pt text larger than 18pt (or text that is bold and larger than 14pt). For AA compliance, text should have a ratio of at least 4.5:1 (larger text, at least 3:1). For AAA compliance, text should have a ratio of at least 7:1 (larger text, at least 4.5:1).

Redesigning the Boarding Pass - Journal - Boarding Pass / Fail

by karlcow & 2 others

This all started on a recent flight aboard a Delta Airlines plane. I was heading back from New York where I had met up with fellow designer Dustin Curtis. If you are not aware of Dustin's take on American Airlines, go read this. Anyway, I was inspired by Dustin and his attitude towards shittily designed things, to say the least. I was bored so I started rummaging through my stuff trying to find something to read when I grabbed my boarding pass. So I stared at it for a while. Rubbed my eyes, then stared at it some more.
