Unlimited Novelty: "Can you solve this problem for me on the whiteboard?"

by night.kame

Le blogueur.

My attitude is if I'm a good Ruby programmer, and you're trying to hire me when the supply for Ruby programmers is low and demand is high, that before you even talk to me you've spent at least 10 minutes Googling for my name, looking at my code, and figuring out who I am, rather than spending an hour subjecting me to a series of ad hoc programming questions in areas I may or may not specialize in. That 10 minutes of Google will tell you a lot more than asking me to come in and scribble stuff on a whiteboard.

Le commentateur.

I take your point about the interviewer asking appropriate questions for the interview. But it sounds to me like you're telling me your skills as a coder don't extend to making your ideas and plans understood without handing someone actual finished Ruby code, written on a laptop. If that's the case, then I can't work with you.

Daring Fireball Linked List: Sony, Too

by night.kame

Sony should no more abandon the point-and-shoot camera market than Apple should abandon the music-playing iPod market, but Sony has to recognize that it’s a business in decline and that the future is in putting better cameras into phones.

Wikipedia Map Interface

by karlcow

The dynamic map is completely created in your browser. This has the advantage that the map is interactive, you can zoom into it, change colors, and see for every point what article it is and link to it. But it has the major disadvantage that it requires some heavy resources. This link may crash your browser. Use a reasonably fast machine, a current version of Chrome, and be patient while loading the data — your browser is loading more than 50 MB of data and processing it via JavaScript into an HTML5 Canvas.

Zieuter.tv | AU MENU | Radio-Canada.ca

by gregg

Damien Katz: The Future of CouchDB

by karlcow

If it sounds like I'm saying Apache was a mistake, I'm not. Apache was a big part in the success of CouchDB, without it CouchDB would not have enjoyed the early success it did. But in my opinion it's reached a point where the consensus based approach has limited the competitiveness of the project. It's not personal, it's business.

*sigh* when people will learn. Question of culture, I guess. Yes consensus has a different way of working, but it creates a lot of wealth, which is different from money.

Starkers: The completely naked theme for WordPress

by sbrothier
Starkers is a bare-bones WordPress theme created to act as a starting point for the theme designer. Free of all style, presentational elements, and non-semantic markup, Starkers is the perfect ‘blank slate’ for your projects, as it’s a stripped-back version of the ‘Twenty Ten’ theme that ships with WordPress.

Blog Stéphane Bortzmeyer: RFC 6455: The WebSocket protocol

by oseres

Komei Juku - Maui, Hawaii Iaijutsu

by Takwann
The first line of each couplet describes a natural phenomenon and the following line makes the point for the first line’s statement. This poem is not haiku but has a similar structure that sets a scene and follows with an allusion to an iaijutsu waza. The placement of the poem after the listed description of the Chuden wazas in the makimono suggests that it is not intended to be descriptions of or technical advice about the Chuden wazas. Rather the poem’s purpose seems to be to communicate the spirit and attitude that the practice of iaijutsu should develop. Therefore the poem should lead to understanding the spirit of iaijutsu.

Where Have All the Photojournalists Gone? - Technology - GOOD

by karlcow

"If what makes a photographer better isn't clear, then I don't think photographer jobs should be preserved just because they have up until this point. People thought the profession of photography was threatened when autofocus was introduced, but photographers who lasted proved that knowing the technical elements of a camera was the least important part of their value."

Role in the society and possession, access to a skill not owned by others. The uniqueness of the skills being diluted, the initial value disappear, and then the ecosystem changes.

Order Posts by Custom Key revisited

by mozkart
ORDER POSTS BY CUSTOM KEY REVISITED By BRANDON | Published: JANUARY 13, 2009 I’ve gotten quite a few questions about how to get this to work on a specific page, or only within a specific category. I actually had the same issue when building the script originally. The trick is that you can’t just use the conditional tags in the functions page. At that point, it’s already too late because the queries have already been run. You have to create a function and then run it as a filter on one of the early WordPress initializing functions. I chose the wp() function. Here is my revised code (nearly straight from the client’s site).

Framework symfony, quelle version choisir ? – Clever Age, 100% digital

by srcmax

by karlcow

Alarm as corporate giants target developing countries - OurWorld 2.0 | OurWorld 2.0

As affluent western markets reach saturation point, global food and drink firms have been opening up new frontiers among people living on $2 a day in low- and middle-income countries. The world’s poor have become their vehicle for growth.

Lynx would not be impressed – on semantics and HTML | Christian Heilmann

by karlcow & 1 other

Semantics are like wonderful prose. You use them to deliver an enjoyable product. People are not celebrated for writing books. They are celebrated for what they filled them with. If we keep putting things on the web that have structure and get better on more sophisticated display products we are building for the future. If we point fingers at others doing it wrong we waste our time.

Handcrafted WP Starter Theme « Randy Jensen Online

by mozkart
Handcrafted WP is a starter theme built for WordPress developers who are doing more than building blogs. The theme is based on Ian Stewart’s Toolbox Starter theme and Paul Irish & Divya Manian’s HTML5 Boilerplate plus some other awesome features based off our years of experience. This is not a framework, but an almost-naked starter theme that gives you a rock solid starting point for crafting a serious website on the WordPress platform.

Daring Fireball Linked List: 'Opponents'

by night.kame

Silverlight was an opponent to Flash. Apple didn’t favor its own proprietary plugin over Flash. There’s no QuickTime plugin on iOS either.

Apple’s view was, and is, that there should be no proprietary web browser plugins, period.

Cargo

by mozkart
Cargo offers its members free standing personal websites with their own URL*, a wide variety of templates, and simple but sophisticated tools to control the way their content is displayed. A personal network of their own creation allows members to follow and comment on the work of others, making themselves known by their artistic engagement with the community. To maintain the highest possible degree of quality, every site we initiate is by invite only. However, we frequently award memberships to unaffiliated talents who share a sample of their work (contact us). Setting up a Cargo site can be done in just a few steps: 1  Choose a base design 2  Add content 3  Customize the look & feel 4  Point a URL 5  Link with other sites *Note: Cargo offers a Free Basic Service, which does not include certain features like a personal URL, but otherwise allows for full membership privileges. To access additional functionality we offer Upgraded membership. More info. Cargo websites have a front- and a back-side. The front is a member’s public website, the back is their Personal Network, connecting them to the people they follow on Cargo.

dretblog: Creating Resources with GET/PUT

by karlcow

here is the proposed sequence of steps in this scenario: clients GET the template and a token from the factory resource. since this operation does not change server state, it is safe and idempotent and it is possible to use GET. clients PUT to the token URI, at which point the server creates and populates the resource at the repository level, and keeps track of the token from which the resource has been created. the server responds with a 303 (See Other) response, indicating the persistent URI of the resource. subsequent requests to the token URIs are handled with a 301 (Moved Permanently) response, telling clients that the token URI should no longer be used, and that a persistent URI is now available.
