Analyzing Network Characteristics Using JavaScript And The DOM, Part 1 - Smashing Coding

by Monique & 1 other

As Web developers, we have an affinity for developing with JavaScript. Whatever the language used in the back end, JavaScript and the browser are the primary language-platform combination available at the user’s end. It has many uses, ranging from silly to experience-enhancing.

Rocketbox

by karlcow & 3 others

Over time the Mac App Store will become the primary way Mac users purchase their software. Unfortunately this is a marketplace that Rocketbox will not be allowed into. Rocketbox is a Mail plugin which is unsupported by Apple and not allowed in the Mac App Store. As more software moves to the Mac App Store it will become increasingly difficult to sell Rocketbox through a third party website.

Occupy Wall Street: where are the migrants? | openDemocracy

by karlcow

As a first-generation migrant in the United States, the demographics of the Occupy Wall Street Protest intrigues me just enough to notice that there are no conspicuous migrant populations protesting. Where in the so-called masses representing the 99% of America are the East-Asians and South-Asians from Asia? The West-African women from Africa or the Eastern-European men from Europe? This to me is a primary indicator of how heterogeneous the Occupy Wall Street campaign is in a locale as glaringly diverse as New York City in a nation built at the hands of migrant labour.

Daring Fireball Linked List: Against Close Buttons

by night.kame

Gestures, to me, are the touchscreen equivalent of keyboard shortcuts: a convenient alternative, but almost never a good choice for the primary interface for a task. So, sure, it’d be nice if you could flick pages to the top of the screen to close them in Mobile Safari, but keep the red close button there too.

The key to iOS’s success is that you can figure almost everything out just by looking at it.

What Is Boot 2 Gecko? A Look At Mozilla's Chrome-esque Cloud OS | thechromesource - Google Chrome and Chrome OS News and Forum

by oseres (via)
devices tend to be harder to get good open drivers for without pulling in things like X, which we don’t want to do.”  It sounds as though Mozilla believes that developing Boot 2 Gecko for the PC could end up conflicting with their goal to make the system completely open-source. That’s a secondary concern, though- their primary focus is definitely on the booming mobile market. And honestly, can you really blame them? A Rival For Android?

Devastated towns stuck in limbo | The Japan Times Online

by karlcow

His is one of only 50 boats out of 1,000 that survived intact — and only because he remembered the advice of old-timers and took it out to sea immediately after the tsunami warning sirens wailed. From the bay, he watched the waves hit his town.

deCarta Remains Nimble in Mobile and Internet Geographic Search Market - Directions Magazine

JF: To what can you attribute the growth with Opera? You’ve indicated that some of this is from emerging markets. Can you elaborate? KF: Opera has been a great partner and has really helped us get this going within their huge user base.  To some degree, our current customers reflect the distribution of Opera Mini users.  Many of these are in emerging markets such as India, Indonesia and Russia, where the mobile phone is the primary means of accessing the Internet for many people.  However, we are seeing a lot of traffic from North America and Western Europe as well.  User engagement – measured in visits per user and page views per visit – is strong around the world.

Rafael Lozano-Hemmer - Project "Frequency and Volume"

by karlcow

Frequency and Volume enables participants to tune into and listen to different radio frequencies by using their own bodies. A computerised tracking system detects participants' shadows, which are projected on a wall of the exhibition space. The shadows scan the radio waves with their presence and position, while their size controls the volume of the signal. The piece can tune into any frequency between 150 kHz and 1.5 GHz, including air traffic control, FM, AM, short wave, cellular, CB, satellite, wireless telecommunication systems and radio navigation.

Avengers Prime

by alamat & 1 other (via)
AVENGERS PRIME collects issues #1-5 of this indulgence of a mini-series, featuring Brian Michael Bendis’ writing and Alan Davis’ predictably dynamic illustrations. Not that this was a story that needed telling. Rather, AVENGERS PRIME – or, as I like to call it, the big apology adventure – is pretty much Bendis at his most egregious utilizing the decompression style. At the end of this story, what crucial plot points are served, really, other than these three primary Avengers getting over their beef? Forward, the Brightest Day or Heroic Age or whatever.

McGrath: Proposal for a new Fedora project [LWN.net]

by ghis
Interesting point of view of a lead developer of Fedora. "There's no reason in the world we can't spread free software via web applications / cloud computing. Even though someone chooses to run windows or OSX, there's no reason they can't do their primary computing on free software. Perhaps provided by their ISP, their business, other ISPs."
