Incomplete Manifesto for Growth

by karlcow

Process is more important than outcome. When the outcome drives the process we will only ever go to where we’ve already been. If process drives outcome we may not know where we’re going, but we will know we want to be there.

Backdooring a custom DocTestRunner - Python Testing Cookbook

by karlcow

While doctest runs the code examples, it doesn't provide the nice reports some of the other BDD tools have. I dug in to find out how to write my own DocTestRunner that would:

parse the name of the scenario, turning it into a "Given a blah blah blah" statement

look at the line preceding a code example, and if it starts with #when, print that out "when we add a carton of milk..."

look at the line preceding a code example, and if it starts with # (but not #when), print that out followed by the outcome of the test run, "ok" or "FAIL".

Felix culpa - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

by tadeufilippini (via)
Felix culpa From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation, search "The fortunate fall" redirects here. For the novel, see The Fortunate Fall (novel). Felix culpa is a Latin phrase that literally translated means a "blessed fault" or "fortunate fall." As a religious term it refers to Adam and Eve's fall and the loss of the Garden of Eden, known theologically as the source of original sin. The phrase is sung annually in the Exsultet of the Easter Vigil: "O felix culpa quae talem et tantum meruit habere redemptorem," "O happy fault that merited such and so great a Redeemer." The medieval theologian Thomas Aquinas[1] cited this line when he explained how the principle that "God allows evils to happen in order to bring a greater good therefrom" underlies the causal relation between original sin and the Divine Redeemer's Incarnation, thus concluding that a higher state is not inhibited by sin. The Catholic saint Ambrose also speaks of the fortunate ruin of Adam in the Garden of Eden in that his sin brought more good to humanity than if he had stayed perfectly innocent.[2] The concept also comes up in Hebrew tradition in the Exodus of the Israelites from Egypt and is associated with God’s judgment. Although it is not a fall, the thinking goes that without their exile in the desert the Israelites would not have the joy of finding their promised land. With their suffering came the hope of victory and their life restored.[2] The phrase "Oh happy fault!" is used in colloquial English, especially among intellectuals.[citation needed] In a literary context, the term "felix culpa" can describe how a series of miserable events will eventually lead to a happier outcome. The theological concept is one of the underlying themes of Raphael Carter's science fiction novel The Fortunate Fall; the novel's title derives explicitly from the Latin phrase. It is also the theme of the fifteenth-century English text Adam Lay Ybounden, of unknown authorship, and it is used in various guises, such as "Foenix culprit" and "phaymix cupplerts" by James Joyce in Finnegans Wake. Google’s role is not free from the perception of conflict of interest, and that coupled with Ian’s endorsed role as a dictator will affect the credibility of the outcome produced. In particular, it will give Microsoft all of the excuse it needs to avoid implementing the standards. (Not that eliminating that excuse will magically cause Microsoft to participate…)

Pathfinder Development » Bullseye Diagram

by greut

Once the tasks are prioritized and in the bullseye, you can organize, arrange and add structure. You can start to see relationships, which may indicate a different priority. You can start to see categories, which may affect iteration planning. You can begin to add structure. The outcome of this exercise is an easily understood diagram showing the project’s priorities. For teams that aren’t comfortable assigning a number to a task, this is a good alternative to try.

Online Dating Sites Are Simplifying Their Services

by kyl (via)
As dating online is fast and extremely well-liked, currently online dating sites are simplifying their services. After many years of giving added stuff to users, online dating sites are currently revolving the clock reverse. They're returning to the basics to get members for online dating sign up, matching up and going out as quickly as possible. Dean Shanson, Dating Now's singles expert says, "90% of the qualities on chief online dating sites just get in the way of the site's announced aim: getting singles together as quickly as possible. When we started on ruling about formation of a fresh type of online dating site, we purposely searched for ways to move users as speedily as possible from sign up to opening day." The outcome is that while a number of online dating sites ask for page after page for personal information, counting the whole thing opening from education to favorite breakfast cereal, fresh online dating sites like DatingNow allow visitors to register and get search outcomes in a small, single page profile. Shanson says, “That may come into view to go in opposition to the latest style but, the online dating site's easy system has struck a chord with online dating singles. At first, we just ask them for the basics where they’re from, what they’re searching for, and how old they are. We’ve practiced that user’s love the fact that they don’t have to fill in a vast form enclosing questions before they can start searching for love." Even though Dating Now was just opened in the month of September 2003, the online dating site has previously registered and visited by more than hundred of singles for online dating .

A gruesome outcome

by jasontromm
What's worse than legalized abortions? How about legalized abortions performed by a dangerously - and maybe criminally - inept staff that violates state rules, leading to the death of an almost full-term baby? What follows, with information provided by a State Board of Health suspension order, is a scene as gruesome as a slasher film - except it's real life. Or, more accurately, death.
