Roger Ballen directs Die Antwoord video | Photography | Agenda | Phaidon

by sbrothier
Obviously we're big fans of photographer Roger Ballen’s dark and disturbing black and white photographs here at Phaidon. So we were pleased to get a call from him this morning telling us about this music video he's just directed for Cape Town hip hop trio, Die Antwoord. The band's music is characterised by its Zef references (Zef being South African slang for modern and trashy, with lots of knowingly discarded cultural references). Ballen of course is famous for his psychologically charged and unsettling images from South Africa of individuals marginalised from society often depicted in the setting of strange, cell-like rooms. So how did the coupling come about?

Daring Fireball Linked List: Sony, Too

by night.kame

Sony should no more abandon the point-and-shoot camera market than Apple should abandon the music-playing iPod market, but Sony has to recognize that it’s a business in decline and that the future is in putting better cameras into phones.

Nous dit le type qui n'a visiblement jamais eu un téléphone Sony-Ericsson dans les mains.

PressPausePlay - YouTube

The digital revolution of the last decade has unleashed creativity and talent of people in an unprecedented way, unleashing unlimited creative opportunities. But does democratized culture mean better art, film, music and literature or is true talent instead flooded and drowned in the vast digital ocean of mass culture? Is it cultural democracy or mediocrity? This is the question addressed by PressPausePlay, a documentary film containing interviews with some of the world's most influential creators of the digital era.

Insane Entitlement: EMI Sues Irish Gov't For Not Passing SOPA-Like Censorship Law | Techdirt

by karlcow

major record label EMI (in the process of being acquired by Universal Music to make it the largest record label by far) is suing the Irish government because it feels the Irish government is taking too long to pass a SOPA-like law that would require ISPs to censor the internet and block access to sites it doesn't like.

Codex » Info

by sbrothier
Codex is a weekly music podcast hosted by Jean Snow, recorded in Tokyo, Japan. A long, long time ago in a country far, far away (that would be Canada) he used to have a college radio show. He had two of them, actually, first when he was truly a university student — believe it or not, it was called The Jean Snow Show — and then 10 years ago when he was back in Canada for a year, he did another show on the same station (CKUM) which he decided to call Codex (for reasons that have long been forgotten). He’s long missed those days of hosting a weekly music show — in a proper studio — and although he can’t replicate that same environment, he’s recently started doing similar but on the net, in podcast form.
