SOCIAL TV: Creating New Connected Media Experiences

In this course we will examine television distribution asking the question "how is digital technology changing they way television fits into society." The course will take a systemic look at the various ways television is currently distributed with a particular emphasis on emerging technologies that place television in a social context. The classwork for the course will be team and project focused, culminating in each team developing a prototype of a new social TV application. We will explore the multiple facets of the social TV experience from video technology fundamentals and challenges, to user interfaces, content consumption and business cases.

Social TV is a huge buzzword in the TV world these days. Basically, it refers to the ways people are using social media in conjunction with their TV viewing. That might refer to something as simple as checking your Twitter feed on your phone while watching a political debate. It might also include joining a social network oriented around media discovery, like GetGlue, or Miso, where you can find out what your friends think of shows, or be notified when they are watching something. It had us wondering what impact Social TV will have on the way programmers design shows, and whether we’re returning to gathering in the living room watching I Love Lucy, only virtually. Marie-Jose Montpetit is a research scientist at the Research Lab of Electronics at MIT, where she researches putting video on multiple devices and combining it with social networking components.

jQuery HTML5 Uploader is a lightweight jQuery plugin that lets you to quickly add an upload system a-la-Gmail into your web app.
You only need to create a dropbox element (i.e. a div) and jQuery HTML5 Uploader will do the rest. Then you can drag & drop one or more files on the element and the files will be uploaded.
It also works with the multiple input file element.
The upload function is divided into two asynchronous operations: client side, the file is loaded in the browser memory with a FileReader object. Useful if you want, for example, to show the image preview while uploading a picture. The server side operation consists in sending the binary file string to the postUrl (see settings).

Reframing Mexico" looks at the Mexico City beyond the violent headlines. The site features 12 short video documentaries and multiple interactive features. Topics include a single mother raising children in a large metro dump, a carpenter whose illegal immigration to the US ended when the American dream eluded him, a disabled father overcoming stigma and discrimination, and others. Interactive features include a border crossing game, a "build your own wrestler" feature, and more. This project is a collaboration between UNC Photojournalism and Monterrey Tec.

The cough cough moment.Developers who can focus solely on Chrome can expect to be able to see some Harmony features in Chrome (behind a flag) by the middle of 2011. Developers focusing on all browsers will have to wait multiple years for direct Harmony support, due to the relatively slow pace of the standardization process.

The FDroid Repository is an easily-installable catalogue of FOSS applications for the Android platform. The server contains the details of multiple versions of each application, and the Android client makes it easy to browse, install them onto your device, and keep track of updates.
Source code for the application is on Gitorious. You can install the current binary release from here or see the end of this page for a QR code.
You can also browse the repository with a web browser, and download the applications directly from there if you can’t or don’t want to run the F-Droid client on your device.
