Steve’s Bio: A Personal Perspective | Monday Note

by night.kame

Get thee to a physical bookstore, if you can find one, or to Amazon’s or Apple’s online dispensers, you won’t regret it.

Windows 8: BFD — Big Forking Decision | Monday Note

by night.kame

For the first time in Microsoft’s history, the users of Windows-powered hardware will have to ask: ‘Will this application work on that device?’ You can run Office 2010 if there’s Intel inside, but not on its ARM sibling

A nice MacBook Air competitor starting at $1969. The real thing starts at $1299.

What I want for my Mac | Monday Note

by night.kame

As described in a previous Note, I bought the family pack for OS X and iLife updates even though the ‘’single” version can be installed on any number of machines. That alone probably gets me into the lower tier of the Friendly Idiot database somewhere in Apple’s Cloud, but the fact that I also pay $100/yr for MobileMe upgrades me to Platinum status.

We Haven’t Forgotten About Accessibility, Have We? - Monday By Noon

by Monique
After all, the accessible nature of Web standards was a good argument to those that didn’t stand behind standards, right? Lately I’ve been fearing that we may have in part lost sight of how truly important accessibility is.

Better Reading on the iPad: iBooks 1.1, VQR, & PDF | The FontFeed

by sbrothier
Some good things have happened since my post full of iPad grumbles. Time for an update. On Monday, Apple released iOS 4, and along with it a small but significant update to iBooks, its e-reader app. This revision addresses two of my biggest gripes about reading on the iPad.

The poison of arrogance | Monday Note

by night.kame

Second, such practices ultimately damage revenues. Take Apple’s eBooks Store, for instance. Using of a French-based iTunes account prevents a customer from buying books in English on the US eBooks store, this without offering any legal reason for the prohibition. Now, turn to France: perhaps as a surprise to US-based Apple execs, a significant number of French iPad users want to read books in English. The result of Apple’s segregation of iTunes accounts? These users flock to Amazon Kindle’s application.

by François Hodierne

In rocket scientist parlance, escape velocity is the speed needed to break free from Earth’s gravitational field. Last Friday, by an overwhelming majority, Le Monde’s staff voted to escape the black hole of French politics — or, at least, to give their paper the best chance to do so.
