Journalism in the Age of Data: A Video Report on Data Visualization by Geoff McGhee

by gregg & 1 other
Journalists are coping with the rising information flood by borrowing data visualization techniques from computer scientists, researchers and artists. Some newsrooms are already beginning to retool their staffs and systems to prepare for a future in which data becomes a medium. But how do we communicate with data, how can traditional narratives be fused with sophisticated, interactive information displays?

DistroWatch.com: Puppy Linux

by tadeufilippini
Puppy Linux Última Atualização: Wednesday 6 April 2011 03:08 GMT Based on: Independent Origem: Australia Architecture: i386 Desktop: JWM Category: Desktop, Old Computers, Live Medium, Netbooks Status: Active Puppy Linux is yet another Linux distribution. What's different here is that Puppy is extraordinarily small, yet quite full-featured. Puppy boots into a ramdisk and, unlike live CD distributions that have to keep pulling stuff off the CD, it loads into RAM. This means that all applications start in the blink of an eye and respond to user input instantly. Puppy Linux has the ability to boot off a flash card or any USB memory device, CDROM, Zip disk or LS/120/240 Superdisk, floppy disks, internal hard drive. It can even use a multisession formatted CD-RW/DVD-RW to save everything back to the CD/DVD with no hard drive required at all

The Art of the Animated GIF

by sbrothier
Jamie Beck and Kevin Burg's animated photos turn the medium of choice for 4chan trolls into something approaching high art. You know how people sometimes say that jazz is the only truly American art form? Animated GIFs are like the jazz of the internet: they could only exist, and be created and appreciated, online.

Webcam and Photography Tips

by SabrinaM
Photography will be the art, science, and practice of creating pictures by recording radiation on a radiation-sensitive medium, such as a photographic film, or electronic image sensors. Photography uses foremost radiation in the UV, visible and near-IR spectrum. For common purposes the term light is used instead of radiation. Light reflected or emitted from objects form a real image on a light sensitive area. The result on film is a latent image, subsequently developed into a visual image (negative or diapositive). An image on paper base is known as a print. Photography has many uses for business, science, manufacturing, art, and recreational purposes.

Conan O’Brien’s Farewell Speech in Kinetic Typography | The FontFeed

by sbrothier
Just when you thought you’ve seen them all, along comes a kinetic typography project reassuring you that, yes indeed, there still is potential in the medium. This video was created by Jacob Gilbreath, a graphic design student at Oklahoma State University with an emphasis in motion graphics. It visualises a portion of the farewell speech from Conan O’Brien’s final episode of The Tonight Show on NBC. Conan describes his feelings about NBC and the situation at hand. His personality exudes positivity and humour, and this monologue characterises him very well. Even through the hardships of leaving NBC he promotes hard work and kindness.

Defuse | Fluid Interfaces

by sbrothier
Defuse is a new method for navigating and participating in online discussions. Previous designs for online discussion were successful under the assumption that participation would be limited to tens or at most hundreds of participants. Emergent social conventions have been able to smooth over media as they scale, but ultimately they are limited by the design of a medium itself. Defuse seeks to continue scaling online discussions by adding social, structural, and historical context throughout the interface, and by widening the expressivity of a message to match the user's intention. It does so using a combination of natural language processing, machine learning, visualization, data portraiture, social network analysis, and medium design.

The Media Hacker, "Prison Valley" - A Captivating Interactive Documentary

Prison Valley is kind of a hybrid between a point-and-click video game and a traditional documentary. It’s also a great example of filmmakers pushing the online medium to the limit.

The Web Is a Customer Service Medium (Ftrain.com)

by karlcow

I call the people who say such things the Gutenbourgeois. They believe in the cultural primacy of writers and editors and they feel good—even a bit superior—about working in publishing.

They believe it is their job to drive culture forward. The web, they are a little proud to admit, confuses them.

Six Weeks at Google « in progress

by karlcow

For years, I’ve seen the web platform as the underlying platform that bridges from the very small environments – like my mobile phone – through the medium-size (my iPad, netbook, and laptop) to the large (my 27-30″ high-powered desktops and my TV).  Aside from the display, there are obvious differences in the interaction capabilities too (like, no touch interface on my TV

Narrative vs Interactivity: Why video games are NOT a good story-telling medium

by HK
the distinction between the synchronic and diachronic stories. The synchronic story - what happens in the game, the “story” made by the player - is “purely kinetic”, while the diachronic story - the background story, often a “proper” story - is “immutable”. Somewhere in-between are the FMV cut-scenes, which develop both the synchronic and diachronic stories, but are also immutable. Thus, any real progress in plot is always divorced from any interactive challenge. Decisions made during challenges based on timing, sequences of actions, or spatial navigation/arrangements, are not the decisions that can change the course of a story, influence relationships, or reveal something about human nature.
