Using Fonts for Icons... | CSS-Tricks

I've created this page to attempt to convince you. It shows examples and lists six reasons why it's a good idea and three common arguments against them (some of which I refute).

Why Johnny Can’t Opt Out: A Usability Evaluation of Tools to Limit Online Behavioral Advertising

by karlcow

We present results of a 45-participant laboratory study investigating the usability of tools to limit online behavioral advertising (OBA).We tested nine tools, including tools that block access to advertising websites, tools that set cookies indicating a user’s preference to opt out of OBA, and privacy tools that are built directly into web browsers. We interviewed participants about OBA, observed their behavior as they installed and used a privacy tool, and recorded their perceptions and attitudes about that tool. We found serious usability flaws in all nine tools we examined. The online opt-out tools were challenging for users to understand and configure. Users tend to be unfamiliar with most advertising companies, and therefore are unable to make meaningful choices. Users liked the fact that the browsers we tested had built-in Do Not Track features, but were wary of whether advertising companies would respect this preference. Users struggled to install and configure blocking lists to make effective use of blocking tools. They often erroneously concluded the tool they were using was blocking OBA when they had not properly configured it to do so.

Facebook now stands as taking over a decade and a half of the dream of the World Wide Web and turning it into a miserable IT cube farm of pseudo human interaction, a bastardized form of e-mail, of mailing lists, of photo albums, of friendship.

Asiajin » Twitter Finds Recommended Users From The Same IP Address? Rumor Frightening Japanese Users

by karlcow

They wrote that they hide their Twitter existence from their family and colleagues, or never told anyone their sub-accounts are theirs, and concluded that Twitter find those accounts by seeing their global IP address, that means Twitter simply lists other accounts which accesses from the same IP address – home, office, school, etc.

Double interesting thing going on here. The fact that you might be exposed to people near you AND the fact that the company KNOWS who is near you.

Mud Run Races, Training and Gear

by personmark
Finding a mud run The best way to find a mud run to compete can be a little bit tricky. Mud runs aren’t as common as 5K’s, which are usually a dime a dozen on any given Saturday, and this is due to staging the muddy course. There is not a comprehensive calendar that exclusively lists mud runs. Some online calendars can classify mud runs as adventure races or even trail runs. The best way to find a mud run in your area would be to do a simple google search. Just type mud run and your local zip code in the search bar, and see what comes up. Also, if your community has a local running club, that would be a good place to inquire. Finally, just drive to a local running store in your area and ask the manager. They are usually more then happy to help, and may even have registration forms on site. With a little time and the proper resources, you will be able to find a mud run close to you and start getting dirty. Happy hunting.

How did I get an Abuse Complaint? | MailChimp.com

by nicmae
At first, you should take an abuse alert as a "heads up" that people are complaining about your campaigns. We've found that 100% double opt-in lists get about 2-5 abuse reports per 50,000 recipients. If you get more complaints than that, you should be concerned. It's highly recommenced to re-evaluate your email marketing process to prevent further complaints.

Deleted my Twitter account. Made it to 8,234 tweets, 401 following, 2,056 followers, and 209 lists (for what that’s worth) over three years. I’ve deleted my Facebook account as well. Open systems need more of my attention, and it’s time to vote with my feet.

It is far far easier to snipe from the sidelines than it is to put in the effort to attend telcons and face-to-face meetings, to engage on mailing lists, to write specifications and implementations and tutorials.
