Made by Hand

by karlcow

Writer turned knife maker Joel Bukiewicz of Cut Brooklyn talks about the human element of craft, and the potential for a skill to mature into an art. And in sharing his story, he alights on the real meaning of handmade—a movement whose riches are measured in people, not cash.

Big Macs vs. The Naked Chef - Joel on Software

by night.kame

The trouble is that the "training" doesn't really produce consistent results, so Youthful Programmer starts creating rules and procedures that are meant to make more consistent results. Over the years, the rule book grows and grows. Soon it's a six-volume manual called The Methodology.

After a few dozen years, Youthful Programmer is now a Huge Incompetent IT Consultant with a capital-M-methodology and a lot of people who blindly obey the Methodology, even when it doesn't seem to be working, because they have no bloody idea whatsoever what else to do, and they're not really talented programmers -- they're just well-meaning Poli Sci majors who attended the six-week course.

The Joel on Software Discussion Group (CLOSED) - Why I Hate Frameworks

by ghis & 4 others (via)
"So this week, we're introducing a general-purpose tool-building factory factory factory, so that all of your different tool factory factories can be produced by a single, unified factory. The factory factory factory will produce only the tool factory factories that you actually need, and each of those factory factories will produce a single factory based on your custom tool specifications. The final set of tools that emerge from this process will be the ideal tools for your particular project. You'll have *exactly* the hammer you need, and exactly the right tape measure for your task, all at the press of a button (though you may also have to deploy a few *configuration files* to make it all work according to your expectations)."

Urban Legends - By Joel Kotkin | Foreign Policy

by karlcow

Perhaps we need to consider another approach. As unfashionable as it might sound, what if we thought less about the benefits of urban density and more about the many possibilities for proliferating more human-scaled urban centers; what if healthy growth turns out to be best achieved through dispersion, not concentration? Instead of overcrowded cities rimmed by hellish new slums, imagine a world filled with vibrant smaller cities, suburbs, and towns: Which do you think is likelier to produce a higher quality of life, a cleaner environment, and a lifestyle conducive to creative thinking?

Don Norman at the Business of Software 2009 - Joel on Software

by night.kame

It turns out half the people press up, half the people press down, and everybody thinks their choice is obvious.

Vous savez déjà l'utiliser.

Quake II portado para HTML5

by tadeufilippini

Bijan, a good test for the class of products is to read the spec with one class of products in mind.

* I'm an Authoring Tool Developer how do I implement html5,

* I'm a CMS developer how do I implement html5,

* I'm a automatic html translation engine how do I implement html5

Using http://www.w3.org/QA/Taxonomy.html can help to do this exercise.

etc. The html5 specification does a pretty good job at describing what some class of consumers should do. Not so much for other things.
