Jon Rafman

One year ago, I started collecting screen captures of Google Street Views from a range of Street View blogs and through my own hunting. This essay illustrates how my Street View collections reflect the excitement of exploring this new, virtual world. The world captured by Google appears to be more truthful and more transparent because of the weight accorded to external reality, the perception of a neutral, unbiased recording, and even the vastness of the project. At the same time, I acknowledge that this way of photographing creates a cultural text like any other, a structured and structuring space whose codes and meaning the artist and the curator of the images can assist in constructing or deciphering.

Mud Run Races, Training and Gear

by personmark
Finding a mud run The best way to find a mud run to compete can be a little bit tricky. Mud runs aren’t as common as 5K’s, which are usually a dime a dozen on any given Saturday, and this is due to staging the muddy course. There is not a comprehensive calendar that exclusively lists mud runs. Some online calendars can classify mud runs as adventure races or even trail runs. The best way to find a mud run in your area would be to do a simple google search. Just type mud run and your local zip code in the search bar, and see what comes up. Also, if your community has a local running club, that would be a good place to inquire. Finally, just drive to a local running store in your area and ask the manager. They are usually more then happy to help, and may even have registration forms on site. With a little time and the proper resources, you will be able to find a mud run close to you and start getting dirty. Happy hunting.

The Incredible True Story of the Collar Bomb Heist | Magazine

by jeanruaud (via)
The riddles transfixed the city of Erie and drew headlines in newspapers from St. Louis to Sydney. It also set in motion a byzantine investigation, with federal agents sniffing out clues and hunting down leads in twisted pursuit of the shadowy criminal who came to be known as the Collar Bomber. For seven years, the FBI was engaged in a scavenger hunt of its own, one that the Collar Bomber seemed to have planned as intricately as the one that had ensnared Wells. The only question was whether the Feds would get any further than Wells had.

Flickr : MATE Beijing Lovers

by karlcow

I am an Explorer of Human Nature.

Beijing is my Hunting ground. I hear the City breathing in the Hot wet Air of the Summer, I hear the Clinch in the Cold Winter. The splashing of the Strong but Rear Rain of old and new Roofs.

This City is in a state of rebirth, everything is building and rediscovering. Beijing is not existing yet, just a Puzzle of endless fractures of different Centuries.

I can see it, The Desire, the Sex, The Loneliness. I will Photograph it and keep it for the time and me.

InfraNet Lab » Blog Archive » Frozen Cities / Liquid Networks: Infrastructural Autonomy

by karlcow

It seems on paper indeed a possibility, but I have doubts about it. The civilization of hunting will be gone (it is mostly the case already), transforming it into a real sedentary community. But the most important change might be the growth created by the massive input of new cultures in the north. All these ships and planes are carrying people. If the traffic increases a lot, some of these people will start staying in these areas and will dilute the initial culture by pushing it in different directions. The traffic will also create massive ecological issues.

The current relationship between community and the goods they rely on is faceless, and with the decline of subsistence hunting due to changing migration patterns, the connection to food is disappearing.

John Resig - HTML 5 Parsing

by karlcow

If you're interested in giving the new parser a try (it's doubtful that you'll see many obvious changes - but any help in hunting down bugs would be appreciated) you can download a nightly of Firefox, open about:config, and set html5.enable to true.

Cool Hunting: Bruce Shapiro

by sbrothier
Northern California-based artist Bruce Shapiro makes the kind of kinetic sculpture that mesmerizes and dazzles visitors at science museums using computers and simple motors, a practice he terms "The Art of Motion Control." In episode 94 we visit Bruce at the Maker Fair and at his home to learn more about works like "Pipedream," effectively a screen that uses bubbles in place of pixels, "Sisyphus, "an intricate zen sand drawing and a kinetic ribbon sculpture modeled on ribbon dancers.
