Black Holes

by toki
Black holes are objects so dense that not even light can escape their gravity and since nothing can travel faster than light, nothing can escape from inside a black hole. The expression black hole was coined by John Wheeler.

knockd is a port-knock server. It listens to all traffic on an ethernet (or PPP) interface, looking for special "knock" sequences of port-hits. A client makes these port-hits by sending a TCP (or UDP) packet to a port on the server. This port need not be open -- since knockd listens at the link-layer level, it sees all traffic even if it's destined for a closed port. When the server detects a specific sequence of port-hits, it runs a command defined in its configuration file. This can be used to open up holes in a firewall for quick access.

Dissecting 'Inception': Six Interpretations and Five Plot Holes - Cinematical

by bouilloire

Will the Future Contain Information Black Holes? - Data Mining: Text Mining, Visualization and Social Media

by karlcow

knowing that the cinema is empty might attract people who wants to have empty rooms. The business case is possible too.

About being ubiquitous, there are two types of things. Accessible data on things, accessible data on people, I love the first one, I'm very worried about the second one.

I like GPS, because it is a (low quality) broadcast location grid system. It doesn't locate you, you locate yourself on a grid.

On the opposite, cellphone towers location systems are tied to an id (mobile phone contracts), it identifies your location. Very bad.

I wish cellphone towers where only creating a grid of geolocation.

The Biggest Holes On Earth

by karlcow

1. Mir Mine also called Mirny Mine was an open pit diamond mine located in Mirny, Eastern Siberia, Russia. The mine is 525 meters (1,720 ft) deep and has a diameter of 1,200 m (3,900 ft), and is the second largest excavated hole in the world, after Bingham Canyon Mine. The airspace above the mine is closed for helicopters because of a few incidents in which they were sucked in by the downward air flow.

HackBar :: Modules pour Firefox

by decembre
This toolbar will help you in testing sql injections, XSS holes and site security. It is NOT a tool for executing standard exploits and it will NOT teach you how to hack a site. Its main purpose is to help a developer do security audits on his code. If you know what your doing, this toolbar will help you do it faster. If you want to learn to find security holes, you can also use this toolbar, but you will probably also need a book, and a lot of google :)

html5.js > html5-now - Dean Edwards

A JavaScript library to support HTML5 in non-compliant browsers

pas encore sorti

Add. Bruce Lawson : Dean was showing his new JavaScript library that plugs the holes in browsers’ HTML 5 implementations. If a browser does do something natively, ther library does nothing; otherwise it fills that gap—so now you can have Web Forms with all browsers, canvas in IE. As a bonus, it’s all keyboard accessible, everything looks like native UI controls and it even inherits the native Windows themes. I’m looking forward to helping beta test this baby.

The One Fiber Optic Cable No One on the Dig for Tysons Rail Wants to Hit - washingtonpost.com

by night.kame

And they have snapped, accidentally, dozens of those carriers' lines, because even not-so-secret commercial lines sometimes don't show up on utility maps. Goguen, the utility manager, estimates that the rail project has already hit three dozen lines, sometimes doing no damage and other times grinding work to a halt or cutting power to retailers along Route 7. Even after extensively researching land records and maps and digging more than 600 test holes to determine utility locations, it's hard to avoid accidents on a project of such complexity and in such a busy place, he said.

Voilà ce qui se passe quand on fait de l'agile : ça sprinte, ça sprinte, et 3 ans après, il faut un démineur :-)

BOX: Les Petites Morts »

by sbrothier
Many, many years ago, the 5 of us lamented the death of the smut rag. We had grown up under the legandary mantle of Playboy and its innocence, Penthouse and its penetrative expostions, and (for the lucky ones among us with cool older brothers or pervy dads), the no-holes barred Jugs and Hustler. But then the Internet came along, and suddenly all the Vaseline™ on the lens couldn’t justify paying for porn when there was so much of it for free. And yet, we remained unsatisfied. Sure, there was sometimes amazing porn to be found online, but it lacked the polish, the sheen. Plus, all joking aside, we missed the prose aspect of the smut magazine. As they say, the brain IS the largest sex organ (except on Chris, because DAMN. We’ve seen him in the shower.)

BBC NEWS | Science/Nature | Earth 'not at risk' from collider

by karlcow

Our planet is not at risk from the world's most powerful particle physics experiment, a report has concluded. The document addresses fears that the Large Hadron Collider is so energetic, it could have unforeseen consequences. Critics are worried that mini-black holes made at the soon-to-open facility on the French-Swiss border might threaten the Earth's very existence.

Et même si cela était possible, ce serait une bien meilleure que des dizaines d'années de catastrophes écologiques et de guerres. Vivent les mini trou noirs !

CERN creates a new super-fast internet, invites tons of people to a deathmatch - Engadget

Apparently, when CERN isn't colliding particles (and ripping massive holes in the space-time continuum), it's busy working on a new "internet" which will be 10,000 times faster than our current version.
