What will you do next? You can be nice and just talk to him or tickle him or you can start annoying by poking him, screaming at him, squeezing him, holding your finger on him, shaking his room, making him loose balance and fall to the ground or playing tricks on him using various objects. You get to break his daily routine and mess with his mornings, while he is at the office, relaxing at home and even when he is asleep. He will try his best to make you smile.

Visual mouse gestures - Beta testing (including snapshots and previews) - Opera Community

by night.kame

Why can't they just revert the mouse gestures engine to how it was before? It was perfect! Now it's broken, and it seems very likely that it's connected with how the visual UI works. Is holding newbies by the hand (while not in and of itself a bad thing) really more important to Opera than a functional implementation of mouse gestures?

C'est une bonne question.

Strange Rain for iPad, iPhone & iPod touch - Opertoon

by sbrothier
What makes rain strange? When it’s falling on your screen—from the inside. Strange Rain turns your iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch into a skylight on a rainy day. Raindrops fall and splatter on your screen, shifting perspective in 3D as you tilt your device like a handheld camera. By touching the screen, you can guide the path of the raindrops, stepping through the notes of an eerie melody as you go. It’s a relaxing, intriguing experience that feels as if you’re holding a living window in your hands.

Tom Gidden : Removing Ping from iTunes 10.0.1

by night.kame

This setting switches the default behaviour of the arrow links. By default (well, by default in iTunes 10.0.0 and before) the arrows would send the user to the corresponding page in the iTunes Store, but you could also hold down Opt and click to be redirected to the corresponding list in your own library. In my opinion, this was an incredibly useful feature: you can navigate through your own library so quickly. The "invertStoreLinks" setting makes this the default, so you just click to navigate. Holding down Opt while clicking will take you to the store.

data: URI Generator - Convert Online Tool for Icon, image to import it in greasemonkey Script - dopiaza.org

by decembre
data: URI Generator The data: URI scheme allows you to build URLs that embed small data objects. data: URIs are supported by most modern browsers except for Internet Explorer. The lack of IE support is holding back widespread adoption of data: URIs, but they are still very useful in a couple of specific areas such as embedding graphics and other data items in Greasemonkey scripts. You can read more about data: URIs and see some examples of their use, or use the generator below to create your own. data: URIs are defined in RFC 2397.

Designing an easier-to-read NYC subway map

by karlcow

To be honest, I don't remember the map being all that confusing when I was there. But what I do remember is that I hated holding that giant map folded up in my back pocket screaming tourist. It would've been great to have that on my mobile.

The Way of the Dodo — How to Sell 10,000 iPad Cases at $60 Each (and Other Lessons Learned)

by sbrothier & 1 other
Going back to our use first use of a Kindle, we were amazed and excited about the idea of an e-reader. At the same time we started to feel a sense of loss about not holding and reading a good book (despite what one might think, reading is at least in part a tactile thing). While we didn’t act on this feeling on the Kindle as the iPad was announced it was clear that we had to do something. Patrick considered many different types of wood materials to compliment the book element and ultimately decided on bamboo based on its eco appeal and its historic relation to paper.

Touching and Gesturing on the iPhone | SitePen Blog

by srcmax & 1 other

Everyone who owns an iPhone (or who has been holding out for an iPhone 3G) is bound to be excited about a lot of the new things the device can finally do, particularly the introduction of third-party applications. But those of us in the web development community have been itching for something further still: good web applications on the iPhone. This means we need a suitable replacement for mouse events. And boy did we get them! Though at first the APIs seem a little sketchy, once you’ve learned them you should be able to do amazing things in your application.

Indexed Database API

by karlcow

This document defines APIs for a database of records holding simple values and hierarchical objects. Each record consists of a key and some value. Moreover, the database maintains indexes over records it stores. An application developer directly uses an API to locate records either by their key or by using an index. A query language can be layered on this API. An indexed database can be implemented using a persistent B-tree data structure.

World's Biggest Bauhaus Retrospective: The House That Mies and Walter Built - SPIEGEL ONLINE - News - International

by karlcow

As it turns out, there's a good reason for holding the largest Bauhaus exhibition ever this year. "It is because this is also the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall," says one of the exhibition's curators, Klaus Weber, of the Bauhaus Archive in Berlin. Weber explains that there are three archives for Bauhaus memorabilia and documentation around Germany, one in each city where one of the schools was located: Berlin, Dessau and Weimar. "The three institutions used to cooperate even before 1989 -- but it was a little bit complicated," Weber admits. "So if it German reunification had not happened, then the three institutions would never have been able to work together like this."

4. Changes in Fedora for Desktop Users

by tadeufilippini
4. Changes in Fedora for Desktop Users 4.1. Fedora Desktop 4.1.1. GNOME Gnome-panel Previously, users could move the gnome-panel to from one part of the desktop to another by clicking on the gnome-panel, dragging it to another location while holding down the mouse button, and releasing the mouse button. Now, users must also hold down a key on the keyboard while moving the gnome-panel. By default, this modifier key is the Alt key, but users may change it to any other key by using the windows preference tool (System>Preferences>Windows). This change in behavior greatly reduces the chances of a user accidentally moving the panel, and makes moving the gnome-panel the same as moving windows in GNOME.

Studio Photography - The Best Softbox Ever | DIYPhotography.net

by sbrothier
This is a DIY project I have had in mind for a while now. When I purchased my studio flash heads, they came with a couple of small softboxes. Although I prefer to use translucent umbrellas whenever I can (small, light, easy to transport), there are times when a softbox is a better solution. While I could use the studio head softboxes in some circumstances with my small strobes, there was no way of effectively holding the flash in place without a lot of jerry rigging. To this end, I wanted to design a softbox that would be light, reasonably strong and durable, adaptable (double diffuser, grid attachment, barn doors etc.) at a later date and have a quick and easy way to mount the flash.

Chronos Apollonios' Home On Olympus

smtp-delay plug-in for qmail

by camel
smtp-delay is an add-on/plug-in intended for use with qmail. It was written primarily to add banner delays and antipipelining to qmail. These two features are known to be able to block certain types of spam and virus mail sent through non-rfc-compliant SMTP engines. When I looked around for programs to add this functionality to qmail, I found only one such program, and didn't like the way it was done. BTW...I have the same objections to the way its done in sendmail 8.13.x. Since banner delays (the server pausing for some time before issuing an SMTP banner) cause every SMTP connection to take longer, I thought it would be a good idea to somehow exempt "legitimate" mail servers...or at least not subject them to long banner delays. So I decided to tune the banner delay time based on the connecting IP's reverse DNS. IPs with no rDNS get treated the worst (longest banner delay). IPs with rDNS matching a regex intended to detect dynamic/end-user IPs get a moderate delay. All other IPs get a very short banner delay...just long enough to see if they immediately pipeline (send SMTP commands before the banner's been sent). The original intent for smtp-delay was that it should be run before rblsmtpd, and simply set the RBLSMTPD environment variable if applicable, letting rblsmtpd issue the 4xx response. Pretty early on, I realized smtp-delay should be able to run standalone (without dependence on rblsmtpd to do its talking) and issue a 4xx response on its own. Lately, the spam load against our mail cluster has gotten so bad that I've started running smtp-delay after rblsmtpd, based on the idea that there's no point waiting out a long banner delay holding an open socket to an IP we have no intention of accepting mail from anyway. This reduced our concurrency by about 20%.
