A House to Live With: Paul Rand in Esquire 1953: Slideshow: Slide 6: Observatory: Design Observer

by karlcow

A House to Live With The creative heart of the Rand home is the studio. Lighting fixtures, beam lighting insets in ceiling, plus full window footage and white reflector make it an artist’s delight. The house is square in outline, subdivided into 8 rooms, 3 baths, has virtually no corridors, radiant heating throughout. Photo by Hans Namuth.

Mast Humidifier by Shin Okada | Spoon & Tamago

by sbrothier
This weekend New York was hit with a bout of cold weather. All the stations were hyping it as the coldest temperatures of the winter so far. We figured, if not now, when do we succumb to the corrupt border-town sheriff, also known as central heating? So we reluctantly flipped on the switch and, as we heard the motor begin to hum, immediately sensed the iron hand descend, securing us from the outside frost for the price of every last penny of moisture.

We’re all frogs in heating water; the water has been getting hotter gradually as the buffers grow in subsequent generations of hardware, and memory has become cheaper. We’ve been forgetting what the Internet *should* feel like for interactive applications. Us old guy’s memory is fading of how well the Internet worked in the days when links were 64Kb, fractional T1 or T1 speeds.  For interactive applications, it often worked much better than today’s internet.

Storz and Bickel Volcano Herbal Vaporizer

by access2
Herbal vaporizers can be used in smoking cessation, administration of medical marijuana, or a variety of other uses. Instead of heating plant materials to their ignition point and burning them at even higher temperatures, these devices heat the herbs to something just above the boiling point -- about 235 degrees. This not only extracts more of the active component, but does so without producing the harmful -- even toxic -- pyrolytic by-products such as tars and carbon monoxide.

InfraNet Lab » Blog Archive » Resource Hogs: Greening Prison Infrastructure

by karlcow

Prisons are perhaps the most resource-intensive institutional infrastructures. This is largely a function of the unique nature of the building typology, which requires continuous operation, high levels of lighting (for security) and water consumption (for the inmates). Moreover, prison cells that contain toilet fixtures are required to have exhaust venting, increasing heating and cooling loads and costs. With the number of prisons on the rise in the US, new green initiatives are being explored to offset these resource hogs.

More Bloggers Raising Money. Here Come The Politics. And Here Comes My Rant.

by mozkart (via)
More blogs are raising venture capital, we’re hearing from people they’ve pitched. Newcomer Silicon Alley Insider is looking for a $3 - $5 million round, if reports are correct. And PaidContent is pitching for a second round in that same range (PaidContent raised a round of “less than $1 million” in 2006). We’re also hearing that PaidContent is trying to sell the company for $15 million or more, and just bail out with some spending money. These rumored deals come as funding for bloggers is heating up in general. Just a month ago VentureBeat reported a $320,000 raise. In 2007 we saw Sugar Inc. ($10 million), GigaOm ($1 million), Xconomy, Blogher ($3.5 million) and The Huffington Post ($10 million) raise venture capital. That’s at least $25 million in 2007 invested in blogs and blog networks.
