Behind the Name: Meaning, Origin and History of the Name Thaddeus

by tadeufilippini
THADDEUS Gender: Masculine Usage: English, Biblical Pronounced: THAD-ee-əs (English) [key] From Θαδδαιος (Thaddaios), the Greek form of the Aramaic name Thaddai. It is possibly derived from a word meaning "heart", but it may in fact be an Aramaic form of a Greek name such as Theodoros (see THEODORE). In the Gospel of Matthew Thaddeus is listed as one of the twelve apostles, though elsewhere in the New Testament his name is omitted and Jude's appears instead. It is likely that the two names refer to the same person.

Mobile Technologies: From Telecommunications to Media

by karlcow

In light of emerging forms of software, interfaces, cultures of uses, and media practices associated with mobile media, this collection investigates the various ways in which mobile media is developing in different cultural, linguistic, social, and national settings. We consider the promises and politics of mobile media and its role in the dynamic social and gender relations configured in the boundaries between public and private spheres. In turn, the contributors revise the cultural and technological politics of mobiles. The collection is genuinely interdisciplinary, as well as international in its range, with contributors and studies from China, Japan, Korea, Italy, Norway, France, Belgium, Britain, and Australia.

Functional Design for a Dysfunctional World - That’s Design!

by oqdbpo
Introduction We are facing a planet that is slowly disintegrating by pollution and global warming. We live in a society that is sadly corrupted by violence and inequality. And in which poverty goes hand in hand with over consumption. Our world certainly is a dysfunctional world. This exhibition focuses on a group of young designers who operate both as producers and social engineers. In their desire for an instantly engaged attitude, they reinterpret their own environment to offer useful and ingenious suggestions for design that can be at once critical, functional and witty. Using prosaic materials, found or recycled objects, and by reassembling and reconstructing old and new, they address environmental problems, gender issues, and politics of space, or simply press for a more human face of design. Not without humour they trigger awareness of our patterns of behaviour. And by exploring the symbolic values of the objects that surround us, they remind us that while we all share the dream of living in a better world we are equally responsible for creating or at least sustaining it. The participants in the exhibition are students or recent graduates of Konstfack from different departments, including Interior Design and architecture, Industrial Design, Glass and Ceramics and Textiles. Quantitative Analysis - Why Ferraro's Claims are Inaccurate

by democrattotheend
Much has already been said about Geraldine Ferraro’s controversial comments implying that Obama wouldn’t be where he is if he were white (or a woman). The purpose of this post is not to attack or defend her comments, but to test her hypothesis that Clinton has been hampered by her gender while Obama has been helped by his race by looking at the exit poll numbers for people who said that a candidate’s race or gender had any influence on their vote.

Enter personal information about yourself to be bar coded. All of the calculations in Barcode Yourself are based on real world facts, gathered from the Internet. Data like the Gross Domestic Product of each country. Lichtenstein is #1, USA #2, and Sierra Leone is last. From the Center for Disease control, I used the Body Mass Index to figure out how healthy a person is based on height and weight. And from the Institute for Women's Policy Research I discovered the "Gender Gap" which states that "Women Average 72 Cents For Each $1 Earned By A Man." Credits - Scott Blake & Ryan Terry Scott Blake and Ryan Terry met while attending the Interactive Design course at the Savannah College of Art and Design with Professor Frank Barber.

AlterNet: The Great Indian Gender Divide

by ravi
[B]eneath the spectacular "India Shining" story lurks an area of darkness -- the unequal status of its women, who constitute more than half its demographic. The latest official document to highlight this inequity is the 2007 Gender-Gap Index Report by the World Economic Forum (WEF); it places India at the bottom of the global pyramid.

Jessie needs her own space to impart her wisdom (or use as an impromptu soapbox, rant, ramble, eh hem...); therefore, I used my super-professor powers to create my own blog (they're actually super-duper).
