Fukushima: Inside the Exclusion Zone - Alan Taylor - In Focus - The Atlantic
An evacuee relaxes in her makeshift dwelling on the floor of the Big Palette convention center. The crammed emergency quarters lack privacy, and disease can spread rapidly.

The environment in numbers: 1992-2012 - OurWorld 2.0 | OurWorld 2.0
But with so many government, non-government and research organizations with overlapping but frequently competing agendas producing so much data, the task to break through a wall of numbers becomes even harder. For citizens across the world it is challenging to select what information matters and what doesn’t, especially when there are corporate and media forces attempting to distract us from the most critical knowledge.
Where is my user? Part 2, Browser Geolocation | Neogeo ramblings with a Python twist
But the W3C saw, or was made to see, the writing on the wall and built a set of standard APIs into HTML5 for just this case and most modern browsers have picked it up. The draft for the spec is http://dev.w3.org/geo/api/spec-source.html if you want to read it through or need further info. The API is pretty marvelously simple. This implementation changes the URL to return latitude and longitude when they are available, which we can use in our Django view. Plus, the same code works on mobile devices (at least the iOS ones I carry) with no changes.

Occupy Wall Street: where are the migrants? | openDemocracy
As a first-generation migrant in the United States, the demographics of the Occupy Wall Street Protest intrigues me just enough to notice that there are no conspicuous migrant populations protesting. Where in the so-called masses representing the 99% of America are the East-Asians and South-Asians from Asia? The West-African women from Africa or the Eastern-European men from Europe? This to me is a primary indicator of how heterogeneous the Occupy Wall Street campaign is in a locale as glaringly diverse as New York City in a nation built at the hands of migrant labour.

At The Table
Yes, the quilts are beautiful and intriguing enough to hang on a wall but the intention is for them to be touched and used.
Rafael Lozano-Hemmer - Project "Frequency and Volume"
Frequency and Volume enables participants to tune into and listen to different radio frequencies by using their own bodies. A computerised tracking system detects participants' shadows, which are projected on a wall of the exhibition space. The shadows scan the radio waves with their presence and position, while their size controls the volume of the signal. The piece can tune into any frequency between 150 kHz and 1.5 GHz, including air traffic control, FM, AM, short wave, cellular, CB, satellite, wireless telecommunication systems and radio navigation.

Fukushima: It's much worse than you think - Features - Al Jazeera English
"Somehow, robotically, they will have to go in there and manage to put it in a container and store it for infinity, and that technology doesn't exist. Nobody knows how to pick up the molten core from the floor, there is no solution available now for picking that up from the floor."
