Edward Tufte forum: Touchscreens have no hand
So instead let us give more time for doing physical things in the real world and less time for staring at (and touching) the glowing flat rectangle.
AuthaGraph | TSUNAGARAI project | Miraikan
This projection method transfers a 3-dimentional sphere into a 2-dimensional rectangle while maintaining areas proportions. Using this method, the “AuthaGraph world map” succeeds in transferring an image of the spherical Earth to a flat surface while evenly distributing distortion. An architect, Hajime Narukawa and his collaborators invented it in 1999.

Un manuel pour les affiches envoyées par la posteWhen you receive your print, you'll find that it's curled inward upon itself, the result of its confinement within a sturdy U-Line mailing tube. Rolled up posters do not display nearly as well as those that lie flat, so your first order of business should be to revert this cylinder to a broad rectangle. You may accomplish this by rolling it out upon a flat surface, placing several heavy books upon it, and letting it sit for a day or two. Or you may wrap the poster around the outside of the mailing tube in the opposite direction of its curl, use rubber bands to affix the ends, and let it sit for an hour or two, thereby allowing the mailing tube to amend the foul havoc it has wrought.

AfriGadget » Blog Archive » Flat parabolic mirror is not an oxymoron!
# It is very cheap,
# It can be quickly dismantled or moved,
# It is easily transportable as it can be carried flat or in a tube,
# It is easily repaired if broken as the individual mirror pieces can be replaced (rather than having to fix or replace an entire parabolic mirror).

click opera - A passion for polished concrete
"The existing floor was uneven from inaccurate construction," writes Schemata architect Jo Nagasaka, "so we poured epoxy mixed with pine ash on the floor to create a flat surface. The transparent black liquid made different shades of black, following the uneven surface on the floor. It looked like gradation of color on a gradually shoaling beach."

schemata architecture office: flat project
bois siliconéearlier, in june this year, japanese architecture studio schemata poured color epoxy
on the top board of school desks which were used in elementary schools. the now 'flat'
desks were before uneven due to time deterioration or scribbling. although the school
desks all have the same shape, they gradually gain individual character through the personal
items of the pupil, like a school bag or a hat. however, in this project, the individuality of
the desks is regenerated through colors, thanks to the craftsmanship and expertise
of nakamura shuhei. he reset the the unevenness to 'flat' with translucent color epoxy.
deep points are mirrored by dense colors and shallow points by more transparent shades.
this project is part of the 'flatproject' series.
