glamrock/Soapy - GitHub

by karlcow

Soapy is a small, free Fire Fox plugin that allows users to go to web sites banned under SOPA -- making SOPA, if it is passed, moot. It focuses on the DNS-blocking technique favored by oppressive regimes and middle management. Because this is designed to go around a complete block, HTTPS is disabled for sites covered by this plugin.

Whatfettle - Paul Downey (psd)

by karlcow

For my money any tool or Web framework worth writing your code inside out for should fire up a dentist's drill, slap you around the face and repeatedly ask IS IT SAFE? until it GET's a straight answer.

Egypt's naked blogger is a bomb aimed at the patriarchs in our minds | Mona Eltahawy | Comment is free | guardian.co.uk

by karlcow

When Mohammed Bouazizi, fed up with humiliation, repression and poverty, set himself on fire in Tunisia last January, essentially taking state abuse to its logical end, he ignited the revolutionary imagination of the Middle East and north Africa. Aliaa Mahdy, fed up with hypocrisy and sexual repression, undressed. She is the Molotov cocktail thrown at the Mubaraks in our heads – the dictators of our mind – which insists that revolutions cannot succeed without a tidal wave of cultural changes that upend misogyny and sexual hypocrisy.

The Volokh Conspiracy » Will Jeff Bezos Bring Feudal Security to the Net?

by karlcow

Of course, where there’s feudalism, there’s droit de seigneur. The price for security will be, probably must be, a loss of privacy, anonymity, and control to Amazon.  Right now, Amazon’s terms of service provide some contractual anonymity to users, but as a technical matter Amazon has total visibility into everything that happens on a Fire tablet.  That visibility is very likely necessary for security, and it is damn sure valuable for commercial purposes.  So it’s hard to imagine that it won’t be used for both purposes.

Libyan Rebels Are Flying Their Own Minidrone | Danger Room | Wired.com

by karlcow

Aeryon Labs, a Canadian defense firm, revealed on Tuesday that it had quietly provided the rebel forces with a teeny, tiny surveillance drone, called the Aeryon Scout. Small enough to fit into a backpack, the 3-pound, four-rotor robot gave Libyan forces eyes in the sky independent of the Predators, Fire Scout surveillance copters and manned spy planes that NATO flew overhead. Don’t worry, it’s not armed.

ahah. Love the Do not worry, it's not armed. DIY war.

The Pitfall of Customizability in UI Design | KaishinLab

by oseres
A customizable interface is an interface that gives the user partial or total control over one or several of its properties. If my sporadic observations are anything to go by, a growing number of people involved in building user interfaces resort to customizability as a sure-fire way to empower users and give them more control over their workflows. After all, the heterogeneity of user expectations renders the challenge of designing universal interfaces unsurmountable, or so they say.

YouTube - Devil's Hill Protest Music Video

by karlcow

Lachine residents and friends sing out a protest song to Montreal Westers to help them understand the dangers they are imposing on neighboring families. The battle over a Devil's Hill street -- officially known as Broughton Road in Montreal West and as Des Érables in Lachine -- has raged for almost two decades. But on October 5, 2010, Montreal West erected a raised platform topped by bollards, cutting off emergency evacuation route for the hundreds of people living on the opposite side of the street in Lachine. SIM (Montreal's Fire Services) and the SVPM (Montreal police have publicly stated their opposition to the structure : it slows ambulance and fire services, endangers firefighters and their equipment and cuts off one of only two emergency evacuation routes for residents living near freight train lines. A 2002 independant study found no usual high traffic on the street and recommended against closing it off. Lachine residents appeal to Montreal Westers to "Take the barricade down!"Song composed by Pat Schmidt, ©2010

Why node.js disappoints me - Die in a Fire - Eric Florenzano’s Blog

by karlcow

Instead of coding in one language, we're actually coding in two. One is the subset JavaScript that can be run in all browsers, and another is the set of JavaScript that can be run by Node. Knowing the difference between the two languages and context switching between them is simply a required skill.

Destruction Of Chinese Books In The Peking Siege Of 1900 - 62nd IFLA General Conference

by karlcow

The destruction of what remained of the Hanlin library in 1900 through fire and pillage is more than just an interesting story. It has symbolic significance. First, it portrays the fragile nature of a civilization's written heritage. Vast compilations seem to devalue the originals on which they were based; that is, what was not chosen to be copied and passed on was most often lost.

copy against single point of failure. Copy is survival.
