Multilingual User Generated Content and SEO « Code as Craft

by karlcow

karl says: Your comment is awaiting moderation. December 2, 2011 at 2:51 pm There is a missing opportunity from both monolingual search engines and content providers. It’s kind of sad. The fact to have one unique URI that a French user can just paste to his Japanese friend is one wonderful thing of content negotiation. How do we leverage this, so search engines are able to understand it? Enter the never used 1998 RFC: “Transparent Content Negotiation in HTTP” (RFC 2295). http://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc2295 I wonder what it would take for Google to negotiate with content providers and offering this feature. The solution is super simple. We were living in a world where sites were quite monolingual but this has changed since.

All Visual Arts - Charles Matton - Charles Matton: Enclosures

by sbrothier (via)
AVA (All Visual Arts) is proud to present the first major retrospective of French artist Charles Matton. Thirty eight undiscovered boxes will be installed in Kings Cross. From 1985 until his death in 2008, Charles Matton created mixed media works  which defy easy  classification. Theatrical, atmospheric, meticulously constructed, his small scale interiors are housed in see through boxes with glass fronts.

Unitag.fr ou la French touch au service des QR Codes

by eledo34

Saigon Opera House

by alamat & 1 other (via)
The Saigon Opera House (Vietnamese: Nhà hát lớn Thành phố Hồ Chí Minh), an opera house in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, is an example of French Colonial architecture in Vietnam. Built in 1897 by French architect Ferret Eugene, the 800 seat building was used as the home of the Lower House assembly of South Vietnam after 1956. It was not until 1975 that it was again used as a theatre, and restored in 1995.

Trans-Atlantic Time Trap - The Daily WTF

On most computers, including the developers', the code simply set the system date to the current month, day and year. On the French computers-where dates use the DD/MM/YYYY format-the code swapped the months and the days.

polis: Revisiting Henry Miller's Paris

by karlcow

Brassaï claims that a large reason why Miller came to Paris is that he felt he could live a more dignified life in the midst of poverty than in the American city, where being poor was viewed as a "moral failure," a commentary on the differing experiences of poverty and class between American and French global cities with which I am grappling today.

Review: Google Translate for iPhone -- you speak one language, the app speaks it back in another language - iPhone J.D.

by night.kame

For example, make sure your the app is in English to French mode, press one button in the app, say to your iPhone "where is the train station," and then a second later your iPhone displays "où est la gare" and you can tap one button to have that spoken in French so that the person in Paris can hear and understand you and point in a direction.

Si à Paris on me demande "où est la gare", je réponds "quelle gare ?" !
