Python Ecosystem - An Introduction » mirnazim.org

by karlcow & 2 others

This is not about teaching Python - the programming language. This tutorial will not magically transform you into a Python ninja. I am assuming that you already know the basics of Python. If you don't, then stop right now. Go read Zed Shaw's brilliant free book Learn Python The Hard Way first and then come back.

How I learned to stop worrying and love REST - Mike Mayo

by karlcow

By following the REST style, I would have saved myself either A) having to alter my iOS code and resubmit to the store, or B) time spent researching alternate caching methods and implementing them in Rails. As it stands, my partially-RESTful API is going to cost me (and possibly the client) more time before we can call the project finished.

openphoto/frontend - GitHub

by karlcow

OpenPhoto works similarly to Flickr, Smugmug and other photo sharing services with one major difference: you retain ownership and give OpenPhoto access to use them. All photos, tags and comments are stored in your personal cloud accounts with companies like Amazon, Rackspace or Google. This means you can easily switch between OpenPhoto services, use more than one at a time or stop using them altogether while retaining all of your photos, tags and comments.

Japan: I am Isolated in My Workplace · Global Voices

by karlcow

“The Internet can be a saving grace if you’re isolated in your school or workplace.” - This was a remark from my recent interview with Izumi Mihashi from Lingua Japanese. I was reminded of it when chancing upon a poignant cry in the form of an anonymous blog entry [ja]. Bullying doesn’t stop at the schoolyard.

Vendor Prefixes Are Hurting the Web

by Monique & 1 other

I think vendor prefixes are hurting the Web. They are hurting Web authors. They are hurting users of browsers. They are hurting competition in the Web browser space. I think we (people developing browsers and Web standards) should stop hurting the Web. It would also make sense for browsers to implement other browsers’ prefixed features to the extent existing content uses prefixed features.

Paris, Je t’aime | Garance Doré

by karlcow

Let me explain why and how this happened. Years ago an Italian writer wrote a book (not a great book), a story about teenagers, love and death. A scene in this book described two lovers who hooked a lock at Ponte Milvio, in Rome, in the name of their love. Since the book began very famous in Italy among teenagers, all lovers (all teenagers) began to hook their lockets on every bridge, everywhere in Italy: in Florence they began on Ponte Vecchio as well, wasting the beauty of the Art. It’s very difficult remove them, in fact. I hope this stupid behaviour will stop soon, but as I can see it’s common also in France now. It’s epidemic.
