Volatile and Decentralized: Measuring the mobile web is hard

by karlcow

The W3C Resource Timing API provides an expanded set of events for capturing individual resource timings on a page, which is essential for deep analysis. However, this API is still in the early design stages and there seems to be a lot of ongoing debate about how much information can and should be exposed through JavaScript, e.g., for privacy reasons.

Helvetireader²

by sbrothier & 10 others (via)
Helvetireader is a hosted user stylesheet for Google Reader served via a user-script. It aims to make the interface a clean, minimal experience where you're not assaulted by an array of colours, social features and buttons (using Shortcuts instead). It's designed for people who just read the latest entries in expanded view without all the other gubbins.

The Iaido Newsletter: Iwata Norikazu interview

by Takwann
I first met Iwata Sensei in England in August 2000. I found him to be a very interesting teacher with a strong personality. He is very knowledgeable in iaido and it's history, and is a strict sensei. I therefore wanted to do an interview to get some basic background information about this strong teacher. My friend Mr. Neil Kemp, from Britain, has trained under Iwata Sensei for years and has visited and trained in Japan many times with other senior students. He was going to Japan in November 2001 to once again learn from Iwata Sensei so I sent my questions to him and he kindly asked my questions and even expanded on them. In May 2002 Neil again visited Japan and asked some additional questions as I wished to focus further on some parts. So we got a long story, but I think you will be interested in it.

for looking at just unread feeds in the expanded view, using Keyboard Shortcuts instead of on-screen buttons. It’s not going to suit how everyone uses Google Reader, so you can take the CSS and personalise to your hearts content!

Quick Tip – Resizing Images Based On Browser Window Size | Build Internet!

by mozkart
In fluid layouts it is easy to format the text to adjust nicely when the window is resized, but the images are not as fluid-friendly. This Quick Tip shows you how to swap between two image sizes based on the current size of the browser, div, or whatever you decide to make the deciding factor. For those looking for a real life example, Last.fm uses this technique on their artist pages. The technique that will be used can be expanded to cause additional changes upon resize as well, beyond simply image swapping (ie captions, navigation).

Coke Wisdom O’Neal - mixed greens - The Box

by sbrothier
Over the last 10 years, I have learned my trade and developed my vision without traditional training. Photography has been both passion and paycheck. I learned
the technical arts of film, chemistry and printing through the good fortune of
working among photographers, artists, and intellectuals. My travels, both
domestic and abroad, have given me knowledge of the world and the passion to document it. Recently, my work has expanded to include not only the final photograph, but the interactions with my subjects

One Floor Up: Subprime

by karlcow

Mike Winkelman of Beeple has created an animated editorial on over-consumption. His short video features a spinning house being upgraded, expanded, and refurnished over and over again. The rotating and rebuilding visuals are completely captivating. The whole thing makes you question your own need vs want, consumer self. I will even, just this once, forgive them their isometric ways (perspective people, PERSPECTIVE).

A growing collection of Basic WordPress Templates, for web designers | SAOB: Senseless Acts of Beauty

by camel (via)
After beginning development of several WordPress websites I found that I was doing the same beginning edits to the wordpress theme structure. So, in order to make my life easy, I proceeded to make some basic editable templates that would suit my needs for multiple websites. Also its very close to Christmas, and this is a time of giving and sharing so I am going to make these theme templates available to anyone. NOTE: These theme templates are only meant to be expanded by a web designer, by no means are these templates a finished design. Now then, there are many basic features of any website that I wanted to make available in each of these theme templates, and over time I will try and make a theme template for each combination. Features to be considered: * Single column layout * Two column layout * Three column layout * Fixed width * Fluid width * Top navigation addition * Search bar in header * Multiple side bars

simpleCart(js) + PayPal = E-commerce in minutes

by Spone & 5 others
Over the past few years, our company has had several clients who have needed a smaller shopping cart, usually to sell just a couple of items. We generally built these small carts using paypal. I realized it would be nice to package this up, and create a lightweight, easy-to-use, flexible shopping cart. So we made simpleCart(js). The cart is a 10.5kb javascript file that uses cookies to keep track of the items in the cart. SimpleCart(js) doesn’t require any databases or programming knowledge. You simply need to know some basic HTML and have the ability to copy and paste. However, it can easily be expanded to use databases or contain more advanced options.

Digg's New Threaded Comment System

by sbrothier
Digg has added a new comment system which, in an apparent effort to fight "comment abuse", hides replies automatically. Comments can be expanded either through clicking on 'View Replies' or using the 'Expand Tree' button in 'Comment Display Options'. The Digg Up and Digg Down buttons also have new icons.

Google Reader Preview Enhanced v1.07g – Userscripts.org

by decembre
Permet de visualiser pour chacun des liens des "Outils pour les webmasters", le PR, l'anchor text, etc...Adds a "Preview button" to Google Reader that allows you to view actual article in a frame. Clicking again on that button goes back to RSS view. Does work both in List view and expanded view. Here are some advantages of the script : - You can see and post comments right from Google Reader ! - You can read truncated rss feeds entirely. - You don't lose time opening a new window or tab in order to go on the website and see the article in its original context. Preview can be opened by clicking on article's title, preview button on typing Shift-V
